The IGI has coverage for this time period but I don't see any Edward Morton baptism.

Hi John

I've spent quite some time looking for the Straughan family as they are my ancestors.  Holy Island and the parishes around had a few Straughans if I remember correctly.  If I get a chance I'll have a look for you when at Woodhorn records centre.

Hi John

I've been to Woodhorn today and have had a quick attempt at getting you some information.

The Northumberland Marriages Index 1813 - 1837 cites an Edward Morton who married Jane Brown on 8th June 1817 in the Kyloe parish - which is very near Holy Island.  This may well be a red herring for you - hopefully it's not.  I haven't really had a chance to look at anything much else yet.

Doh!

First of all I didn't realise that the info for Nataz was the Morton info.

So for Nataz

I've been to Woodhorn and looked at the directories for Holy Island and can find no reference to Edward Morton.  However, as you may already know the 1841 census for Holy Island (HI) shows:

James Morton Fisherman 35 years bn HI
Jane Morton 35 years
Isabella Morton 15 years
Ellen Morton 9 years
Nichol Morton (male) 7 years
James Morton 5 years
Jane Morton 3 years
Elizabeth Morton < 3 months.

With the exception of Jane the mother it appears all were born on Holy Island.

There is also a Margaret Morton an older women of independent means which may suggest that she has been widowed and is a victualler - innkeeper.

Hope this helps

Now that I've got things sorted between you and Green-Bowler (who is looking for the Straughans) I'll have a look at the HI records when I get back to Woodhorn

Hi to John

I've already written this message but when I tried to post is the information with some images attached seems to have been lost in the ether. The information I am trying to send are not subject to crown copyright and should not breech any copyright laws - perhaps the file was too large.  They are images of the White's Directory 1847 and Whellan's Directory 1855.  I'll attempt to insert them in this email.

Your gx3 grandfather Edward Straughan' s parents Robert and Eleanor were not on Holy Island (HI) on the 1841 census.  However, as you probably already know they are there by the 1851 census onward.

The Straughans had the Iron Rails Inn on the island.  It also looks as if one of their sons, George, became a tailor on the island and he too is mentioned in the trade directories.

Another trade directory states

'In a square, formerly the market place, is a beautiful cross of stone...It is surrounded by iron railings and encloses a sun dial'.

This hopefully give some clue to the whereabouts of the inn.

I've attempted an image of the trade directory without success so will give the information as below;

White's Directory 1847
J Beadnal, vict., Ship ell shopkeeper and post office
James Bowmaker, vict., Swan
Wm Cornet, vict.,
R Douglas, vict., Britannia
George Harrison, vict., St Cuthbert
Thomas McIntosh, vict., Selby Arms
George Rankin, vict., Anchor
ROBERT STRAUGHAN, vict., THE IRON RAILS
Wm Wilson, vict and harbour master

Thomas Trew is the local tailor then and Ralph Wilson is the pilot.

It looks as if some of them doubled up on lots of the occupations - not surprising for so small a community.

By the 1855 Whellan's Trade Directory George is a tailor with Thomas Thew.

By 1855
Jane Rankin has the Anchor
George Grey (also shopkeeper) the Britannia
Thomas Thew (also tailor) the Castle
William Rankin (also farmer) the Fisherman's Arms
ROBERT STRAUGHAN the Iron Rails
William Wilson (also harbour master) the Northumberland Arms
Roderick McIntosh (also shopkeeper) the Selby Arms
John Beadnel (also formerly shopkeeper and post office) the Ship
Margaret Bowmaker (sister of James Bowmaker) the Swan.

As you probably already know, again, in 1851 Robert is described as a pilot and so it looks as if he has doubled up his occupations.

Edward his son is a 12 year old and George his oldest is a 21 year old tailor.

By 1861 Robert Straughan is described as a farmer.  His son John is a 20 year old farm labourer.

It was chucking out time at Woodhorn before I got a chance to look at 1871 and onward.

Hope this is of assistance.
J.A

Thats ok

Edward Morton had moved to Jarrow by 1841 so that explains his absence in the census.

Thanks anyway

Nataz :)

Many trade directories ( including 1800s and for Northumberland) are searchable and browsable on line at...

For Nataz

I've had a chance to have a good look at the Holy Island parish records.  Unfortunately I could not see an Edward Morton's baptism.  There are however, other baptisms as below.

1799 September, Elizabeth 1st Daughter of Thomas Morton, Fisherman. his wife Isabella Patterson daughter of John Patterson

1801 February, James 1st son ...

1803 October, Isabella 2nd daughter ...

1806 May, Robert 2nd son ...

1809 July, John 3rd son ...

1811 September, Thomas 4th son ...

There is a woman called Margaret Morton who has children to a man called Cromarty but not an Edward that I can see.

There is also another Morton family with William as the father and Isabella as the mother.

1771 John to William and Isabella Morton
1775 Margaret ...
1781 Andrew ...

There is also a child born out of wedlock to James Morton and Jane Walker in 1795 but this is a daughter Jane.

The burials include
1804 Barbara Morton daughter of Robert and Isabella Morton 10 years - weakly from infancy.
1806 Robert Morton fisherman 71 years
1811 John Morton Blacksmith 66 years.

I had a quick scan of the marriages to see if they would give any clues  then rechecked the baptisms in case I had missed Edward but to no avail.  Sorry I was not successful with your find - I've included the findings as they may be clues to assist you.

Yours
J.A.

Hi John

I had a look at the baptisms of Straughans for Holy Island.

1811 26th December, William Straughan 2nd son of Edward Straughan ploughman native of Scrammerston by his wife Margaret Anderson native of Belford parish

1815 28th December Thomasin Straughan daughter of William Straughan ploughman of Fenham Hill.

Presumably the Edward and William Straughan are brothers.  I hope this information is of some help too.

Yours
J.A.
