I would be very interested to hear from anyone with connections to, or knowledge of, the HEMINGS family in southern Warwickshire in the period before 1600 to after 1700. Usual variant spellings include Hemmings, Heming, Heminge, etc.
I have tracked my Hemings/Hemmings line back to Mollington on the Oxfordshire-Warwickshire border in the mid-1600s and have just obtained the will of my G8-gf Edward Hemings (c1620-1705), yeoman, showing he was a farmer with holdings in Warmington and Mollington.
What I have established so far is that Edward Hemings was married to Margery at the time of his death; and had children named Peter, John, Richard, and Mary, all born outside of Mollington in the mid-1600s. Mary was bap. in Warmington in 1658 but the baptisms of her elder brothers have not yet been found (neighbouring parishes: Farnborough, Shotteswell, Avon Dassett, Burton Dassett, Fenny Compton, etc.). Peter (my G7-gf) married Elizabeth Nixon (Wixon?) in 1678 in Mollington; John married Israel; Richard married Hannah (Ann); and Mary married Richard Pettipher (possibly a 2nd husband).
If any of this rings a bell with you, I would love to compare notes.

As there have been no replies yet to this thread, I thought it might be useful to widen the area of interest to the parishes in southern Warwickshire and have taken the liberty of editing the title of the thread to this effect.
There is reason to believe that my Hemings clan moved to the Warmington-Mollington parishes in the early to mid 1600s. So where were they before that? The IGI shows that the Hemings name (and variants) was relatively common in southern Warwickshire and particularly in the early Stratford On Avon registers. They were yeoman and my recent research has shown that the family group in Warmington were masons with James Hemings (c1595-1671) as the patriarch.
Unfortunately, the Warmington registers have not allowed me to confirm the link with my G8-gf Edward Hemings in neighbouring Mollington -- as likely as it is. Evidently, that story is yet to emerge in another parish register. I am hoping someone out there holds the key to the puzzle.

Hi RThom
Do you have a John Hemmings b. 1782 Banbury and m. Lydia Plackett?
-
Hello Wardonia:
I have seen this John Hemmings, b. 1782 Banbury, s/o John & Mary, on the IGI. There is also a John, b. 1780 Banbury, s/o Thomas & Ann Hemmings. However, I haven't yet been able to connect these families with my line, even though they were in the neighbouring parishes of Mollington, Cropredy and Great Bourton around this time.
I would be very interested to hear what else you know about this John Hemmings.
Regards, rthom
-
I know nothing of John & Mary's history. They had at least 3 children, Joseph (1780), John (1782) and Thomas (1785) Banbury Oxon
John & Lydia had at least 3 children, Elizabeth (1816), James (1817) and Richard (1820) Radford Semele Warks
My research is through Richard who married Ann Barnacle.
-
This is a little tantalizing as John, Thomas, Joseph, James and Richard are all typical Hemmings names from this period and location. I'll let you know if any connection emerges.

Hi,
I notice you mention Banbury so I just wonder if you have come across Martha Hemmings who married Thomas NEEDLE 14 Jan 1807 in Banbury?
I have a line of Hemmings from Worcester and don't think this Martha links with them in any way either.

Hi Trees:
I'm sorry, but I don't know if Martha Hemmings is connected with my line who had moved east to Northants a couple of generations earlier. I daresay she fits in as a descendant of one of the distant cousin branches.
How far back have you gone with your Worcester line? There appears to be no shortage of Hemmings (and variants) in Worcester in the 16th century!

Hi,
As you say Worcestershire seems to be awash with Hemmings etc I have found both my husband and I have Ancestors of that name in the county.
Husband's direct line has Thomas and Joyce HEMMING with a family of 9 in Salwarpe between 1674 and 1692 His is their daughter Mary 1680 who married Thomas DUGARD Mine aren't direct line but Alice HEMMING b 1883 m My Great Uncle George MARSHALL 1905 in Chaddesley Corbett I started to follow her back to see if the families link but have only got to Richard and Mary Ann who had Henry in 1840 who married Ann SKINNER 9 Dec 1860 in Chaddesley Corbet with 5 children. for some reason I think child No 4 Mary Ann was bap in Chadeworth Berks. Which I thought was veering toward Mum's Banbury Hemming, The Worcester lot are Dad's line.

Thanks, Trees.
Growing up in London in the 1950s, I hardly ran into the Hemmings name and thought it was quite rare. Little did I know what was out there waiting for me, especially in Banburyshire and the West Midlands. ;)
BTW, I love your website!

Many thanks for your kind words re our site it is still developing and I'll let you know when we add any more Hemming(s)

Hi there,
In my family tree I have a Mary Hemming who married Robert Grantham 19/10/1790 at Tysoe, Warwickshire, Eng.
Any chance that Mary may belong to your family tree?
Kind regards,

Hi Trees & Rthom,
Thank you for the reply to my Hemmings query.
Afraid I haven't come across Bayliss or Wigson.
The other surnames I'm connected to in Tysoe are:-
Newton, Litefoote/Lightfoote, Austin, Ward, Hancox, Winter & Quinney.
Maybe we will find a connection some day.
Kind regards,
Mel

I have just started looking at a Hemmings line in my (ex) wife' s tree, from Shipston on Stour, which is only 5 miles from Tysoe.
The earliest I have is Thomas Hemmimgs who married Jane Davies on 27 Nov 1754 at Shipston on Stour, who had a son Thomas baptised 16 March 1767. I don't know where Thomas was from (yet!)
Ring any bells? Worcs/Warwicks are out of my usual counties of interest
David

Hi David,
Although I have a printout of Tysoe Baptisms 1575-1837 for Hemmings (and variants of the name) I cant find any Thomas born in Tysoe 1764 nor for his father Thomas circa 1734
I do have some deaths for hemming's in Tysoe for the same period but no Thomas
Marriages for that period in Tysoe were:-
19 Apr 1707 Wm Hemmins & Jane Cockerill
26 Oct 1740 E;izabeth Hemmins & Charles Westbury
5 May 1752 John Hemmens & Elizabeth Hutcheons
11 Oc 1785 Ann Hemmins & John Brewer
8 Nov 1815 Sarah Heming & Henry Castle
18 Oct 1819 Daniel Hemmings & Auss Ainge
19 Oct 1790 Mary Hemmings & Robert Grantham (which is my family connection)
The family then seem to have moved onto Skipton/Shipton on Stour, Deddington, Pillerton Priors & Pillerton, Rowington, Butlers Marston & Idlicoat & Rowington.
Regards,
Mel

Thanks for that information Mel, which if nothing else eliminates Tysoe!
Kind regards

I have a Mary Hemmings (born 1723) in my family tree; she married Thomas Hancox of Tysoe and they had 14 children.
Unfortunately I don't know anymore about Mary at this stage. Could she be connected?

PS - forgot to add: The info I gave was kindly provided to me by another Rootschatter. I've asked him whether he has personally seen the details on Mary's grave (I suspect he has, as I know he's visited that churchyard), or if he has other records. His wife is unwell, so there may be a delay before he gets back to me. If I find out more, I'll let you know.

Hello all fellow Hemings researchers :D
Warwick library has transcriptions of Tysoe parish registers, I was there for hours not long ago going looking for Hemmings and other names I am researching in Tysoe going through page by page. Then I realised there was a helpful index at the back in surname order! Doh!!
To be honest by that time I had had enough but I am planning to go back soon as I still have the deaths and some Baptisms to go. Any way enough waffling ;D
Cynthia - I've had a quiclk look at my notes and I have a Mary Hemmings baptised 29 Sept 1726 daughter of John and Emma could this be your Mary? I haven't found a marriage to Thomas Hancox yet though
regards
Zoe

Hi Zoe
No, that appears to be a different Mary Hemmings - born/died in Cropthorne, whereas mine was, as far as I can tell, both born and died in Tysoe. Just taking another look..... according to the IGI the Mary you mention died at the age of 2, so I doubt you'll find a marraige record. ;)
Cynthia

Me again! ;D LOL. Who else are you researching in Tysoe Zoe?
Cynthia
-
Hello Cynthia:
Thanks for that download! I wish my lot were from Tysoe; but no joy, I fear! :) :)
Looking through your data, though, it looks like Mary's place of birth is not yet known, and the 1723 birth year is estimated from the age at burial.

Hi Cynthia,
I'm also reseaching Newman, Lighfoot, Winter & Quinney. I am related to Satchwell (Mel) (Hi cousin!)through the Robert Grantham and Mary Hemming line. Mels ancestor went to NZ, mine stayed in warwickshire!
You may have one already but here is a picture of Tysoe Parish church.

Please Zoe may I use your photograph of the church on my web to illustrate information about my Tysoe BAYLIS family?
Trees

Hi Trees,
Of course you can ;D. Its a lovely church both inside and out and there are some fantastic old gravestones. Great website by the way
Zoe

Many thanks for use of the photograph and for your kind words about the website

Hi Zoe
Mel told me yesterday you were cousins! :D We've been trying to figure out the possible Mary Hemming connection for a little while. Thanks for the pic. I have another which I'll try to insert.....
I'm told all the headstones were made of a soft stone that does not wear well, making many of them very hard to read. Note to self: ensure own headstone made of very durable material so future generations who want to know all about me because I was either rich and famous or because I've successfully passed down a love of history can read it!

Hi All:
I haven't had much to contribute to the last few exchanges. But I have enjoyed Zoe's great pictures of the Tysoe parish church and Cynthia's comments on gravestones. :) :) :)
I thought you might be interested to know that the Hemings family in nearby Warmington -- that I am researching and also the reason for starting this thread -- were well known as master stone masons who were responsible for many of the fine monuments in the Warmington St Michael's churchyard.
Regards, rthom
-
Hi rthom,
That must be wonderful to be able to see monuments that your ancesors built, good luck with the search for Warmington Hemings, I'll keep an eye out for them :D
Zoe
-
Hi Zoe:
Thanks for those thoughts.
Rewinding to the first couple of entries in this thread, you will see that my personal quest is to first draw the link in the early to mid 1600s between my confirmed Mollington Hemings family and the large contingent of Hemings in Warmington. If that can be confirmed, my next quest is to find out where the family came from before Warmington, c. 1620. There is still room for a few generations in many of the parish records, so I have my fingers crossed. :) :) :)

Hi All,
Many thanks to Zoe & Cynthia for the great photos of the Church in Tysoe.
Much appreciated.

Hi All:
For those of you researching the Hemings family in Tysoe, Mel has just made an interesting posting on a Roger Hemings appearing in the Tysoe Hearth Tax records in 1671 over on the Oxfordshire site:

Thanks, Mel.
