Hi,
The only thing I can think of is Forkner? A misspelling of Faulkner perhaps?

Fortner perhaps? Though the "n" looks like it should be something else ...
-
when was the birth and what area?
maybe a search around the area may give some clues. I was just thinking on census returns there maybe family near?
Just an idea.....
I have no idea what name it is but they must have used the scratchiest pen they could find ;D

Could it be Farmer?

Hi Amy
Have you looked for a marriage for the parents? Give us the details you have and we can have a look round.
Regards, Bill

Just wondering if it is Farkar - a phonetic spelling of the Scots Farquhar

Thank you everyone for your suggestions.
Mary Ann ?? was born approx 1810 in Alverstoke, Hampshire. She married William Bevis in aprox. 1828/9 in the Alverstoke / Gosport area.
I had hoped this birth certificate (which is for the brother of my ancestor) would shed some light on her maiden name - but alas!
-
The IGI has a marriage for a William Bevis to a Mary Ann Footner 27.7.1830 in St Thomas Portsmouth.
Any good?

Susan,
I think you might have cracked it! How that marriage would have escaped me in the first place is a mystery - I must be going gaga in my dotage.
Thank you so much.

That's why Rootschat is so good - someone out there always spots the ones we overlook.
Glad to have helped. Warm fuzzy feeling :)
