Hi there,
I wonder if anyone can help me. I am searching for my GGG Grandfather. This is not an easy one!!!
I know that he was born around 1809 (probably in Ireland) and that he lived in Manchester. In 1864, on his son's marriage certificate, his occupation was 'Railway Porter'. He died in 1884 in Burnley.
I have been unable to find him in any of the censuses which is very disappointing. His Christian name is Garrett/Garratt/Garett/Garatt or maybe even Garet! The Surname though is the difficult one! It is either McKeown (he married with this name) or McKeon (he died with this name!) or it could be listed as McEwen - his son used that name! Indeed anything that could sound like it - McOwen, McKewin etc etc might be him!!! Hopefully the 'Garrett/Garratt' part of it will make him easier to find! I think he married an Elizabeth or Betsy in 1841 in Manchester - so he might be with her in the censuses!! I don't think that he or his wife were able to write which is why the name is never the same twice!
I have recently heard about the water damaged census transcripts in Manchester and I wondered if some kind soul, when they get a minute, could possibly check them for me. It would be wonderful to find some reference to him after 18 months of searching!
Many thanks in advance for any help with this,
Best regards
Jane

If you track back from the known your circus proprietor GG grandfather on the 1881 census and his first child born in Nottinghamshire in 1872 you can find Thomas, his wife and sister on the 1871 census.
RG10 3505 folio 126
Windmill Lane Eyres Gardens Sneiton Nottinghamshire
Thomas McEwen 27 Head Married Manchester Lancashire Gymnastic artisit
Emma McEwen 27 Wife Married East Stockwith
Jane McEwen 13 Sister Manchester Lancashire
That gives you a combination of Jane's age and Thomas' age both with a birth place in Manchester and a father whose first name was Garrett or spelling something like that, to look for on the 1861 census.
RG9 2933 folio 113
40 William Street Manchester
Garratt McRone 49 Ireland Head Married Coal Heaver
Elizabeth McRone 48 Ireland Wife Married
Thomas McRone 16 Manchester Lancashire Son Cast sheet maker
Catherine McRone 13 Manchester Lancashire Daughter Cotton Doubler
James McRone 9 Manchester Lancashire Son Sweeper at cotton mill
Elizabeth McRone 5 Manchester Lancashire Daughter
Jane McRone 2 Manchester Lancashire Daughter
Catherine Dewire 38 Ireland Lodger Weaver cotton mill deaf and dumb from birth
It looks like Rone and has been indexed as Ronie.

Hi Valda,
Many thanks for the reply. I had found Thomas, Emma and Jane in the 1871 census but I'm trying to make a link between what I believe is Thomas' father Garratt McKeown's marriage to Betsy Deignan in March 1841 at Cathedral Manchester and the later 1861 census information on the McRones, in an attempt to prove that the Garratts are one and the same person.
Regarding the 1861 Garratt - I'm still trying to find any records of any of these children's births (including Thomas') so that I can get the certificates, again to prove that I am on the right track with it all. I did find a Jane McEwen born 10th October 1858 and got her certificate - but the father's name was James. The mother of Jane though was Elizabeth Dignum - very close to Garratt's wife Betsy Deignan! All very confusing!
I was hoping that if I could find a Garratt in the water damaged census information, it would give me some more clues to unravelling it all!
Thanks again for your help, I really do appreciate you taking the trouble to look.
Best regards
