Title: New to Genealogy
Post by: Burghposter on Friday 10 November 06 20:41 GMT (UK)
Folks,

can you give me info on sites where I can feed my family tree details into please?

Or are there good downloads out there.  :)  ;) :)

check out the links in this thread -   :D

IMHO, I think you are better off entering your tree into your own software program, rather than entering it online on a commercial or free site.  That way you can control who sees your data.

Hello Burghposter ... welcome to the insane world of RootsChatting !

My recommendation would be to actually buy a software programme, install it on your computer, and keep everything you find on that, rather than a public site like, for e.g. GenesReunited ... see the thread

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=193515.0

for what lots of people on this site says about GR.  Its good at times, but public ...

The other thing I'd say you ought to do (must do ?) is to keep your bits of paper and notes you make TIDY !!   (This is one of those 'do as I say, not as I do, things !)

I'm sure other Chatterers can recommend threads about good software, or can recommend.  I've used Genbox for many years; its OK, it works for me, but there are others I'm sure are better.

Welcome aboard

.. and don't forget to log the names you are researching in the RootsChat Surname Interests Table - http://surname.rootschat.com/

You never know, you might be related to another RootsChatter  :)

Good luck with your research

The other thing I would say is to log your surname interests in as many places as you can. Don't worry if nobody replies for a long, long time - it might be 5 years before that long lost rellie with all the answers you need starts to do some Googling and then, if you still have the e-mail address to which notification of any activity should be sent, you will make some progress.

Hi,
try www.lostcousins.com - I've only had a couple of matches with it, but others have been more successful.

Personally I have been successful with Genes Reunited and have made several contacts who are connected in some way to my tree, but then I've not got a problem with my tree being public.  I've had photo's of relatives come into my possesion through extended family members who I've met there.

Ancestry World Tree - I have also had some matches with.

www.curiousfox.com is another I've had limited contacts from.

As other's have said get your names out there.  County surnames lists.
www.county-surnames.co.uk  Of course the surnames interests board on this site.

Good luck and happy hunting

Sorry that should have been www.lostcousins.com
 don't know what happened there.
Oh and put your surname interests in your profile.  I for one always read who people are researching, when I read their posts.

Hi Burghposter,

I agree with all the comments about buying your own software and not putting your tree on the net for everyone to see.
However, I use www.tribalpages.com (http://www.tribalpages.com) where you can upload stuff from your personal tree using GEDCOM but you can put a password onto it so that only people you choose can view it.  Your names will appear to others searching for the same names but they have to email you through tribalpages to make contact and ask to see your tree - then it's up to you ....
I haven't made any contacts through tribalpages myself, but I find my tribalpages tree really useful to show to other contacts I make elsewhere.

Just a thought ...

Maggie

You can also use

[Free RootsChat Webspace]  (at bottom of rootschat pages)

to put your tree online!  Then put the URL in your profile.
