Can anyone please give me any info. about Ardkill and surrounding environs. I have just discovered a relative born in Ardkill in the 1860's and wonder why his parents located there? Rest of the Moon clan seems to be living at that time in the Coleraine area. Thankyou.

Ardkill is a townland in the parish of Clondermot, Co. Londonderry, meaning "the high wood" area is 566 acres 0 rods 12 perches. Enumeration & postal districts: Ardmore.
(I'm connected to Moons of Managher and also have information on those at Clarehill, etc. in Aghadowey parish.)

Thank You for your kind reply to my enquiry. I have been researching my Moon roots in Derry for over a year now. My grandfather Robert Mcneill Moon born in 1893 emmigrated to Canada in 1927. His father James Moon was a carpenter in the Coleraine area. James was born in 1867 in Ardkill. He was wed to Elizabeth Mcneill in 1890. His father was John Moon(my great-great grandfather) and his mother was Margaret Jane Sherrard. John was a gardener living in Ardkill in 1867. In the context of the day I wonder who he was gardening for? Do you know of any estates or grand homes in the area or could he have worked at a nursery perhaps. I have discovered that Moon is a very old name in the Aghadowey area but do not know of an immediate connection to my family yet. Thank you again for taking the time to respond.

I would be delighted to have info. on any Moons living in the Coleraine region. They could be ancestors and relatives of mine. Thank You.

Tofrek- don't think the your Moons are connected to Aghadowey ones but just came across a note in my files:
John? Moon.
1. James (23 Nov.1896-24 Feb.1935).
2. Mary.
3. Elizabeth.
4. Alice.
5. Margaret.
6. Christina.
7. Bella.
8. Robert.
9. Hugh McNeill.
10. George.
11. John, b. Killowen, Coleraine.
And what seems to be your family:
John Moon, gardener.
1. James Moon, carpenter, m.(1890 Coleraine) Elizabeth McNeill.
2. William Moon, carpenter.
The first family were notes taken from a query a friend made on behalf of someone else in Jan.2006. I will have to contact her and see if there are more details. At the time it didn't connect to any of the Aghadowey families.

Thank You for responding. This is my family. Census records I have just obtained from LDS confirm this. James Moon (the carpenter)b.1867 in Ardkill and Elizabeth McNeill b.1863 in Coleraine had eleven children: Mary, John, Robert, Bella, James, Elizabeth, Margaret, Christina, Hugh, George, and Alice. In 1901 the family was living at No.76 Killowen Street in Coleraine. In 1911 they resided at No.18 New Row Upper in Coleraine. Robert Moon born in 1893 was my Grandfather who emigrated to Canada in 1927. He was a wonderful kind man who used to sing old Irish tunes to us when we were kids. William Moon is a new name to me. Perhaps my Great- Grandfathers brother? James states his "Religious Profession" as Congregationalist. Could you guess what church he may have attended in the area. Any further info. you or your friend may have would be greatly appreciated. Thank You for your assistance to this point!!!

Hi there I live in the townland of Ardkill, Ardmore. It is a rural countryside location, located about 6miles from the city of Derry. My family have only been living/farming in Ardkill since the 1970's.
There is an old derelict house/mansion on the Ardkill Road called Ardkill House. It was owned by wealthly landowners back in the 1800/1900's, I think their surname was Stevenson. Maybe your relative worked there?
You mentioned a surname, Sherrard. I know that in Ardmore there is still a family with this surname living in the area.
If you go to multimap.com, select Northern Ireland then input BT47 3RH into the postcode field you can view a map of Ardkill. Let me know if you want me to find out anything more specfic...

Thank You for taking the time to respond. I am very interested in finding out anything about my ancestors' connection to the Ardkill area. I had discovered a man named Robert Stevenson who must have been an important figure in his day around there. This has to be the Ardkill House family. This led me to believe that my great great Grandfather was working on this estate for the Stevenson family. All conjecture on my part. I know that there are Stevensons buried in the Old Glendermott cemetery. I found a website that lists some of the names on the grave markers. I wonder if the Sherrards have been in this area since the 1840s-1850s. This may be my great great Grandmothers family. My late father mentioned that there may have been a plant nursery in the family history somewhere. So the gardener connection could come from that. Maybe it was the Sherrards who were in the business. Are you any where near the old cemetery? Any Sherrard contact info. Many Thanks

Yes I think the old cemetry is close by so I could do a bit of hunting for you. Let me know specific details. Also if you have the cemetery name and address it would help as there are several old cemeterys in the area.

Hello again. Firstly let me thank you for the info. regarding Mr. Sherrard. I will write him and hope he is receptive to my inquiries. Nothing ventured... As far as the old cemetery location is concerned I understand that it is tucked behind the Altnagelvin hospital. I know that my great great grandfather John Moon was a Congregationalist . I don't know about the Sherrards. Any thing else you could discover would be very much appreciated. Thank You!
