Post by: The Yokel on Wednesday 08 November 06 20:21 GMT (UK)
Hi

Looking for Mary Ann Brown age 28 and daughters Elizabeth age 3 and Mary Ann age 1, all born Gorleston.

The 1881 census shows them at Stradbroke Rd, Gorleston
Mary Ann is shown as Wife (Head) a Fisherman’s Wife
Is her Husband with her in 1871?

Many thanks in anticipation

Hi Yokel
On the 1891 census

Mary A Brown head wid 46                         Suffolk Gorleston
Albert E   "     son u/m 18 blacksmiths lab      "           "
Ellen A Moss sister u/m 38                             "            "
Carnell W Thetford lodger u/m 33 plumber?painter Norfolk Norwich
living at 218 High Street, Gorleston, Suffol
Rg12/ 1496
folio 98
page 5

Any chance this being the right Mary Ann Brown from your 1881/1871 census, as there is a sister living with them. Also ther is a marriage for a Mary Ann Moss in 1864 and on the same page is a Jacob Brown.

On the 1861 census there is this family
Robert Moss head mar 63 farm lab  Norfolk Blofield?
Ann         "     wife mar 52                      "     Yarmouth
Robert     "     son u/m 22 farm lab     Suffolk Hopton?
Mary Ann  "    dau u/m 18 dressmaker   "       Bradwell
Ellen         "    dau u/m 11  scholar          "            "
living at Gorleston,Mutford,  Suffolk
Rg9/ 1198
folio 83
page 45

Ther is a Jacob Brown on the 1851 census aged 7 born Gorleston

Bit of a long shot but might be worth looking into

Hi Ricky

I like the sound of that, thanks very much for taking the time to look it up.

The person I am trying to trace is Ernest Brown age 26 a Hawker born Gorleston on the 1901 census (RG13/1805 folio 37 pg 14 sch 98)

The best match for Ernest I could on the 1881 was the son of Mary Ann.

I have the ref of his marriage to Sarah Wade, so I need to either find him (hopefully) in one of the Lowestoft PR’s or buy the Certificate, to find out who his Father is.

You couldn’t by any chance see if you can find Ernest on the 1891 census for me, please.

Again many thanks for your help

Regards

Thanks Ricky

I thought the first Mary Ann you found sounded like a good candidate, but now this one seems more likely, but still without her husband  :-\

thanks for taking the time

yokel

ps
I suspect it's Seago Street

Hi Yokel
Was doing alright till Ernest turned up, looking at Mimosa posting they must have married just before James was born, so if he was born 1865 ish , then the marriage must be around that time, but which Mary Ann married a Brown?

thanks Mimosa and Ricky

Ernest's address on his marriage cert was 76 Seago St and his father was James Brown

there's a James Brown and a Mary Ann Rol* on FreeBMD Sept 1864 Yarmouth 4b 9
(will try to find them now)

guess James must have been at sea on the 71 and 81 census'

thanks again for your help

Hi Ricky

no, not yet.
I need to go to the record office and find James and Mary Ann's fathers names, which will hopefully be on the marriage certificate

according to the census' Mary Ann was born Gorleston and James was born in what looks like Hettingham? Suffolk on the 1901 (pos Mettingham) but I cannot find either of them on the 1851

would also like to find James on the 71 and 81

just found him on the 1881, on board a boat called Ethel, born Bungay

Hi Yokel

I know this is an old thread but I have only just come across it.
Mary Ann surname is Roll
She was born in Gorleston in 1843 Fathers name John Kelly Roll  butcher
James father was Francis Brown Labourer.
This comes from their marriage certificate which I have only just received.
I am researching the family of Lilly May Brown, Ernest's sister (my wifes G Grandmother)

Hope this helps
