Title: PRETTYJOHNS/PRETTEJOHNS/PEATHEYJOHNS etc
Post by: wendydbriscoe on Wednesday 08 November 06 11:09 GMT (UK)
Hi
I Would like to establish a link with the above surnames if i can, for the last 12 years i have been researching the surname Prettyjohns from the South Brent and Ugborough areas of Devon.
I found out from another researcher that the name Peatheyjohns was another variant of the spelling.
What i would like  to know if their is a link between the prettejohns from Stokenham and the rest of the southhams
and the southbrent ones
Kind Regards
Wendy

Hi Wendy   I have a Mary Prettyjohns marrying a Jonas Coaker in 1824 at Dartmouth as Jonas was born 1797 suspect she was born around first few years of 1800 not sure when she died but before 1840 I had always thought she would have come from Stokenham but never found her.have you got a link to her,do you have her in your records?
Brian.

I have ONE girl named Prettyjohn who married a second cousin (once removed) of mine. I found this info about the name and the source at the bottom.

Researching variants spelling name of
prettyjohn/prettejohn/petheyjohn/peatheyjohns and patheyjohn

Areas of interest are south brent, ugborough kingsbridge/thurlestone, stokenham/lplymouth
Any information regarding this Devon family would be much appreciated

Have done quite a bit of research on the Pettijohn/Pettyjohn/Petitjean/Pethyjohn/Prettyjohn/Perrigin families.
They are all from the same ancestor. Alternatively, you can probably request a copy of Les Petitjeans, The Voyage to Turtle Island, from your public library.
-----------------------------------------
In the family tree I have the surname Patey and Prettyjohn(both Huguenot), the latter being a corruption of Petit Jean or "Little John".

some of this could already be yours - the first statement is asking the same questions as this thread.

Hi Wendy
Thanks for all your help in the past, I am retiring next year so if you want any research done at the Devon Record Office please email me. I too would like to find a connection with the Prettyjohns.

I found a record of a Nicholas Kingswell Prettyjohn in a divorce case in South Africa in 1923 - his wife being Alice nee Charman.

There is a record for the birth in 1914 in Camberwell of a Marjorie  Prettyjohn, with mothers maiden name Charman, and Ive just found a google entry for what looked like the death of Marjorie Droomer in 2008 (nee Prettyjohn) with a dob that matches. Unfortunately this is a dead link.

I know there have been two possible Nicholas K Prettyjohns - born in 1872 and 1895. I suspect the one in the divorce case is probably the 1872 Nicholas but can't be certain.

Does anyone know anything about any of the people mentioned above - especially Alice Charman

Regards, Colin Charman
