Dear Mack
I am looking for info relating to my Grandad. I did have a quick look last night on the Manchester Regiment website so there may be some info on that. I would like to find out more about where they fought etc and the history of the Manchester Reg particularily the 3/5th Manchester in which my grandad was a soldier in 1914-1918. His name was William Latham and he came from Leigh, Lancashire.

hi carole
the 5th battalion was a territorial unit based in Wigan, formed from local men, they were created to provide defense for the UK homeland
on the outbreak of war in 1914, the territorial battalions were asked to give up their uk duties and fight abroad with the regular army. generally speaking most accepted. these battalions (5th, 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th edit 'and 10th') became part of the 42nd (East Lancs) division and went off to gallipoli via egypt.
the men who stayed behind formed the basis of a new battalion which was designated 2nd/5th ( the original battalion was now known as the 1st/5th.) their main purpose of the 2nd/5th was to train and supply replacements to 1st.
later on in the war, after conscription, the 2nd/5th went to war in it's own right and a third battalion was raised, this being the 3rd/5th. this was then the reserve battalion to the other two and as such did not leave the UK
i hope this makes sense ;D

;D ;D as Mr monstar quite rightly points out... I omitted the 10th battalion (Oldham) who also formed part of the 42nd division

Haribobs, hang on, hang on, this has come as a shock to me. I was raised on tales of daring do by my grandad about when he fought in the war and now you are telling me that he didn't leave Blighty :o

well if he went abroad i would have thought it would have been with another (poss manchester) battalion, after all the 3/5th was a training battalion
did he have a middle name?
Description
Medal card of Latham, William E
Corps Regiment No Rank
Manchester Regiment 2194 Private
Manchester Regiment 300325 (incomplete) Private
Date 1914-1920
-
Oh thank goodness for that. No, grandad did not have a middle name, just William, or Billy as he was known. The only reason I said 3/5th was because I have a post card with that written on and on the back he has written to his mother saying he was inspected by Hague. Unforutnately there is no date on it.

Absolutely nothing Harribobs. Grandad has been dead a long time and nothing survives except a couple of photos :(

that's a shame, there is another william latham in the medal cards
Medal card of Latham, William
Corps Regiment No Rank
Manchester Regiment 10499 Private
but he is 18th battalion, an original manchester pal
i'd be very happy to add william's photo to manchester regiment group site if you wish

theres these two.
pte w.latham 41267,won the military medal, his number is one that crops up amongst soldiers in the 3/5th- 3/10th battalions.
and theres this man.
pte w.latham
296
he looks like a prewar territorial, many serving territorials ended up in the 3/5th-3/10th to help the new recruits

Thank you Mack for that. I think I will need to do more research. My grandad was a very modest quiet man and if he won a medal he would not have said, although I am sure my mum would have and I don't recall anyone in the family mentioning it. He wasn't in the TA I'm sure of that. I beleive he went to war at 16, but again it is only what I heard when I was a child. I will keep looking and if I get chance I will look on the MR website, still at work :'(
