Title: Belfast Meet 2007
Post by: Christopher on Thursday 02 November 06 02:37 GMT (UK)
The interest in the Meet in Dublin is looking good however there may be members who will be visiting Northern Ireland next year to search for their ancestors in either the six counties or the old Province of Ulster (that is the nine northern counties).

I think most people enjoyed the Meet this year. There's ample time to arrange a Meet for late July or even August or September. Would members interested in another Meet in Belfast please post on this thread. Would you like a Poll immediately or should we leave it a couple of weeks?

Here are the links to the Dublin Meet 2007....

G'day from Australia. We are planning a trip over your way in July. As my ancestor came from  Ballymena in 1830's. we would like to visit that area while over there. So my question is are you planning a meet in Belfast in July or August. We have already booked into some places we propose to visit.

Seasons Greetings sunseeker,

What dates will you be over?

I think we are easy on the date at the moment so could arrange the meet to fit in with your plans.

Hi Christopher,
The last week of July looks to be the time we wil be visiting Ireland.  The first week of August wil see us in Scotland. We would like to attend the Belfast meet if it is around that time. What could we expect in attending the belfast meet?

My roots go back to Andrew Hutchinson born 1799 at Ballymnena his father was Andrew Hutchinson,(boot/shoemaker) and Mother, Jane Miller who lived in Antrim area.

I would like to know if they had other children and where in Antrim these details could be found.

The son Andrew married Esther McNeice who was born Feb 1802 in Ballymena. Esther’s parents were James and Martha McNeice. James was a brickmaker.

Andrew and Esther had 7 children Mary Jane, born 26Feb 1821, Archibald b. 22/Nov 1822, Matilda b. 14Jan 1824, Robert b. 24dec 1827, Andrew b. 12Aug 1829., Sarah Jane b Jan 1832, and Henry b 12Aug 1834. It appears that they were Presbyterians. They are listed as being born at Kirkinriola, Ballymena, Co Antrim Ireland
The family emigrated from Ireland to Australia in 1838/9 on the ship Garrow

There is a thought that Andrew was an Elder at the First Presbyterian Church in Ballymena.

Hello Sunseeker,

Does Saturday 28th July suit or would the 21st be better for you.
When you say "we" how many will there be? May I put your names on the list?

At this stage I'm not sure what we'll do at the meet. We visited the Linenhall Library, St Anne's Cathedral and City Hall last year. I went on a couple of guided walking tours ... one in August and one in September so we might consider including one of those which lasts an hour to an hour and a half. They are interesting and tell you all about Belfast's history. The visit to the Ulster Museum is a non starter as it is closed for a refurbishment.

All the Best,

Chris.

Hi Chris,  Belfast meet for the 28th July will be right for us.  My wife will be with me. It would be great if I found some distant cousins over there. I am still looking  up Andrew Hutchinson in Ballymena prior to 1838. No luck so far.

Thanks for your message, David.

I look forward to meeting you and your wife.

This year's event looks, at this stage, as though the Belfast Meet will be better than that we had last year. Although it's only January we have fifty percent of last year's attendance on the list already including you and your wife from Australia. Let's hope we get come Americans and Canadians coming too. Last year's event only had members from England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

Hello Christopher,

As I did not attend the 2006 Meet in Belfast I am not sure how the Meet was organised, cost wise.

I think that for those who have either never been to Belfast or have not been for some time, a visit to the Linenhall Library and the City Hall should be on the agenda, however, would either of these places be open on a Saturday and can we get a guided tour ?

What about an Irish  pub - lunch [ if they do one ] in the Crown Bar opposite The Europa ?

Also, would a visit to the Ulster Folk Museum at Cultra be appropriate?  I appreciate that this would involve hiring a bus with additional expense. For example, I have hired a 24 - seater bus for my daughter's wedding next week - 2 1/2 hours costing £120 - would this sort of costing be too much if divided amongst those travelling ?

Please feel free to give me your comments.

Leslie

That's more or less the same as last year Leslie. The Crown Bar is a good idea. I was thinking of the Assembly Building ... Church House in Fisherwick Place ... the General Secretary was not in his office when I phoned today. I also thought of an hour or to an hour and a half on the Open Top Bus Tour. It's a tenner a head.  A guided walking tour of Belfast is also worth considering... they cost about a fiver. The Folk Museum would depend on how many come with cars. The City Hall tour is a good one and there is a guide. Everyone at last year's Meet enjoyed that .. one of the party put on the Lord Mayor's Robes.

Several of the Belfast Forum members are also RootsChatters so I've posted details on that site too. We might be accompanied by potential new members in addition to several who post here on a regular basis.

What about the City Hall, the Assembly Building, the Linenhall Library for a snack lunch, the Crown Bar and then the bus tour . That way we will not breathe Guinness in the Assembly Building !

It all depends if the City Hall, Assembly Building, Linenhall Library and the bus tour work on a Saturday.

RootsChat Belfast Meet. Saturday 28th July.

If there are enough members in Belfast during the week Monday 23rd to 28th July we could meet on one of the other days that week too.

We will be in Ireland and will now have my daughter inlaw and 20month old and very active grandchild with us. At the moment we are not planning to be around Belfast befor 28th. But that may change depending upon what response you have and my families priorities. We are still open to ideas and suggestions of what to do.
thanks Chris for your help.

Hello Chris,

That must have been very disappointing to have only 6 out of 60 possibilities attending the Dublin meet.
How many definites have you got for the Belfast meet?  Now we have come up from from Australia we are not likely to be backing out. Those that are coming should list what they would like to do.
Maybe it could be weekend meet and hire a bus, provided there are sufficient numbers to have an extended tour around Belfast etc.
We need to know where we should be meeting up.

The City Sight Seeing Tours  (http://www.belfastcitysightseeing.com/citytour/times.htm) start at 9.30am and run every half hour until 4.30pm. The tours last an hour and a half. You are able to hop off where you want, have a look round and hop on the next bus.

I'd like to offer my apologies. I've lost interest in organising the Belfast Meet. If there are any members living in the Belfast area who would like to assist that might awaken my interest.

I'd hoped for a better turnout at the Dublin Meet ... at least the quality was there if not the quantity. We had a good time and later in the year will probably announce details of a 2008 Dublin Meet. Keep your eyes open for messages from members of the RootsChat Dublin Six :D

G'day to all of you out there,

Sorry to hear that the interest for the Belfast meet fell by the way. Anyway we are over here now so if anyone sees 3 Aussies with a toddler wandering around your great country, then come and say G'day.
We will be in the northern parts this weekend and if anyone wants to meet up with us then please reply via personal message. I hope to find out more of the Hutchinson's who came from Ballymena in 1838,so if anyone can assist that would be great.

Problems here ... I'll be in the Central Library in Royal Avenue on Saturday morning and would love to meet all those members who will be in Belfast at some stage. I will be in the Local Studies section of the Central Library until 8.00pm this evening .. Hope to be here tomorrow and Friday until about the same time. I took a long lunch today with a friend who I last met about twenty years ago.

Right ... who is in Belfast this coming weekend for the Meet ??? Will any of you be free tomorrow night as there is a Traditional Irish music session at the Rotterdam Bar? That would be a great opening event.
As far as I'm aware there's no cover charge.

Erm...Sainsburys carpark, then Tesco carpark - bit limited for choice of meeting places on a Sunday morning - then we strolled around the town a bit taking in the location of some of the churches/library/museum and having a chat about availability of records etc in the area.

Mini-meets can be good if people are coming to an area they have never been to before and can meet with someone who knows or has (as I have) done some research in the area themselves and can share useful pointers and help people get their bearings more quickly.

If other people would offer to assist it would make a world of a difference. Have a look at the Dublin Meet thread and see how many people indicated that they were interested. I sent a large number of PMs to check if people were going to attend that event and am still waiting to hear from some people. At the heels of the hunt there were six of us in Dublin and there should have been a lot more. Just because one person drops out does not prevent others from meeting and having a great day.

Well Christopher, You know the old saying, ask & you shall receive.

Christopher if you are organising anymore meetings, then why dont you set up a small working group to help you with things.

                                                      Anthony

Sure I know that old saying Anthony. I also know the story of the Good Samaritan where several people walked by on the other side of the road. I've been been in similar situations too many times in my life, Anthony. I've been in groups where a few members did all the hard work and when others were asked to assist they came up with all the excuses under the sun as to why they were unable to help. Why the heck should anyone have to ask? Have you not heard the kindly thoughtful expressions ...  "Would you like some assistance? Can I do anything to help you?"

Ach Biblical quotes are grand. Matthew 7:5 is a good one too. We all make mistakes in our lives.

"You'll never walk alone" Is that a song Scousers sing ???

The last question my Dad asked on his death bed was "Did Liverpool win ???"
