Post by: louis on Wednesday 01 November 06 17:36 GMT (UK)
Mary Jane Smith was born Q1 1875? in alwinton and
married Robert william Graham Q3 1896

Her parents on the 1881 census are

James Smith b 1849 scotland
Jane             b 1847 Alwinton
Adam            b 1871 Harford Bridston
Thomas Gray b1873 Harford Bridston
James Rbt     b 1877Alwinton

They lived at Park House in the census

how do i get a birth certificate for Jane Smith without knowing her maiden name

I have found a Jane Gray that married a james smith in glendale in 1869(dont know if this is right but took the Grey from Thomas as this has happened before on a diffrent side of the tree)

do i order a marriage certificate in the hope it is the right one to get her maiden name

No - although it's tempting because of Thomas' middle name, you won't know for sure whether it's the right marriage, would you? Have you found the family on other census returns in case they have in-laws staying with them?

To make sure it's the right marriage, the thing to do would be to order one of the children's birth certs, which would give you her maiden name.

In the meantime, have you found a Jane Grey born ca. 1847 Alwinton on a previous census?

This looks like the only possible birth for little Adam:
Adam Smith - March quarter 1871 - Ross - 6a 494

Hi,

This looks like Thomas,

Thomas Gray SMITH  Dec Q  1872  Ross  v.6a  p.457

If you get one of these birth certificates and find the mother is Jane GRAY, I wonder if this could be her...

Birth
Jane GREY  Dec Q 1846  Rothbury  v.25  p.386

Rothbury was the registration district for Alwinton, (about 9 miles away).

This could be her in 1861, in the registration district of Glendale,

1861  RG9/3893  f.33  p.11  Chatton
Hetson Law???

Jane GREY     Head  Un  60   Householder  Northd Kirknewton
