Title: McDonald's of Red River, Manitoba
Post by: Spanish_Eyes on Wednesday 01 November 06 17:03 GMT (UK)
Are there any Manitoba McDonald's out there?
I am looking for information on John J McDonald. born March 15, 1834 in St. Andrews, Manitoba and died between 1881-1891.
Also his wife, Mary McDonald nee: Flett, born January 1, 1838 in The Nord-Quest (Alta/Sask) NWT, Canada however she did make her way to Red River Settlement, Manitoba and died after 1906 in I believe Selkirk, Manitoba.
They were married October 20, 1859 in St. Andrews, Manitoba. They had one daughter Mary McDonald born October 18, 1876 in Selkirk, Manitoba who married James Sabiston on February 14, 1894 in Selkirk, Manitoba. He was born March 8, 1872.
I am trying to find out John McDonald and Mary McDonald nee: Flett dates of death and burial and where they are buried.

Thanks, Spanish Eyes

Had a Red River Settlement Reunion last year with many Fletts! Wish I'd had your information then....that's when i got the bug for the genealogy thing, when we put that on....I shall dig for what I can find....
What is your relationship, should I find some living relatives, ( no guarantees, but I'll try) J.J.

Also confirm that this is the only information you need ( death dates)? Do you have both parents for both? Metis script, etc ? J.J.

Hi J.J.
They are my great-great grandparents. Their daughter Mary McDonald is my great grandmother who married James Sabiston.
Mary McDonald Flett's parents were George Flett and Charlotte Tourangeau and John J. McDonald's parents were John McDonald and Sarah Swain.
I have script for them I just need to find out where they died and the date of death and where they are buried.
I am hoping to make up markers for all my older relatives that are not marked with any stone or marker.

Cheers, Spanish Eyes

Hmmm....if there are no grave markers, then it will be hard to confirm unless there is documentation, as that would be the next step necessary...to check the stones....so hopefully markers exist....as next information may still only be maybes...

http://web2.gov.mb.ca/cca/vital/Query.php

You've likely seen this... The age is out, but since the date of death is within the right years...I assume you found him on the 1881 but not the 1891 for Lisgar...?
McDonald John- died 1883  St. Andrews...age 53...
Sometimes says more but that is all it says...you'd have to order it to confirm... instructions and actual number on the site...

There are two listings for the forename Mary in St. Andrews....both are out by a decade for age...J.J.

just looked in on the censuses and see that Mary was in Selkirk Dist. for the 1906.....but those are still the only 2 deaths that are even close...using the after 1906 feature and no place entered...

By the way, welcome to rootschat! You will love this site.... If you have questions for across the pond there are wonderful volunteers there to help...

Have contacted someone to see about relatives, but aren't you looking for local
Sabiston to have information rather than McDonald, as you say she was the only child...Other family of John J.'s might be looking, but Mary's family would be most likely to have gone the extra mile, don't you think?

all the best, J.J.

St. John's Cemetery seems to have been the Marriage, Christening place for many of the family...My first look would be there....

Am wondering if the "J. " was middle name or if it is for John Jr. as this is how it is often listed...( ancestor Geo. was married Parish of St. John, Selkirk Co., Manitoba , first marriage, also)

Hi J.J.
The Sabiston's I am looking for are in Orkney it is just McDonald I am looking for in Manitoba.
Thanks for helping with my search. John and Mary have to be there somewhere. I will maybe check out St. Johns Cemetery and see what they have. I believe John's middle name was J. although I am not 100% sure. I will check out the couple of sites you gave me and see what I can find out there also. I know where Mary Sabiston nee: McDonald is buried, she is at St. Clements Anglican Cemetery in Manitoba. It is just her parents that are a problem to find.

Thanks, Spanish Eyes

Hopefully we get an answer soon... in the meantime...Here are some more old cemeteries....

The 1881 says they were Presbyterian...but it would have been quite a bit of a trek...

Here is another Anglican...

Hey J.J.
I think you are right about the J being for junior and I think I had the birth date wrong. I don't know where I got May 4, 1834 but i believe it is March 15, 1834. I checked his script closer and it looks like the March date.
Also I found some other information about Mary Flett, it says she was born in The Nord-Quest (Alta/Sask) Canada. She did however make her way to Red River Settlement.
Sometimes this stuff just gets painfull but I have to keep searching.

Cheers, Spanish Eyes

Ouest with an "O" French for west... The 1906 says Manitoba and I can't read WHAT it says on the 1901 image :P...The dates on all censuses also vary, so the date on a death certificate could also be wrong...Without documentation, it would likely rely on people's memory.
Did you notice on the 1906 that James is right below your Sabistons and Mary...
and seems he's named a son John J....so the name may be John J. after all....and I suppose it could have been after the father ( at least I think it may be your James...?)

Donald also named his first born son John James, so this could have been the father's and John Junior's middle name ...

You may want to ask about the 1891 on here, also to confirm Mary was a widow...That way you can be sure of the decade you are searching in for the death... J.J.

(By the way, sorry I never found those sites before, they were so similar I thought I'd found the same one as earlier.... ::))

Found Mary & James in the 1911!  ( as Sabisdan)  Haven't found Mary...so the Death - October 15 1907 may be the one, although it is also years out with age of 78...
If you look at the censuses though, her birth date varies from 1834 to 1838...so
then it is not so drastically out ...At least now you know which cert to order first....

Hi J.J.
No problem don't be sorry it gets to be like a spider web sometimes looking for things.
I have seen it still listed as J after John so it could mean James as I have always thought.

Yes Stephen, the date is out by 10 years but thanks for the help. Welcome also to Roots Chat....

I noticed that the censuses vary also which is strange as John is 1834 and Mary is 1838. Maybe whoever did the censuses got confused between the two.

I will have to check into that January 12, 1919 date for Mary McDonald.
The 1911 for James and Mary are for James Sabiston and Mary McDonald the daughter of John and Mary McDonald.

I looked at the 1911, and saw a Mary "Ann"  of that age ....so recheck the census data before ordering that later one, I think!  J.J.
