Hi Jim
I can't think of anyone living in housing in Blackscroft. I used to have a friend who lived there but her family had a 'tied' house belonging to Halley's mill - which is still standing. There are still some old buildings in the vicinity but what they are used for I have no idea. The old library at the beginning of Blackscroft as you leave the Seagate roundabout is now known as the Reading Rooms disco. My husband's grannie lived in St Roques's Lane in the area of Blackscroft, but a lot of the people living there were rehoused into better housing conditions. For instance 'granny' and family were rehoused in the Fleming Trust houses at Fleming Gardens, Dundee. I think most of the Seagate is still there.

Hi Jim
Yes I'll gladly help if I can. You can post them or send them by pm if that is more suitable.
Had a look at Blackscroft today and there appears to be zilch housing there as it has all changed drastically over the years. In recent years a new road system has cut through it. The Seagate roundabout never used to be there. I am going to post a photo taken this morning of what the area of 124 Seagate looks like today. You must have passed it when you were here.

Will try and post the photo of the area where your relations from 124 Seagate would have lived.
Number 124, would be roughly in the middle of the dark wall.

Thanks i will be glad to see the photo, if your not from the area you dont know the place i must have stopped close to these places the other weekend when i was in dundee,
just to give you some information about why am into dundee area, my ancesters where fish merchants etc in dundee and newport areas. seems 40 blackscroft street was one place the stayed and 124 seagate and a few in the 130s as well so i would suspect this may have been a tenement or something.

The building on the photo I think went up in the 1960s. The dark walled area was a public house for good number of years. The building continuing along from the dark walled part is mostly used as local government offices.
At the corner where the building is recessed (and situated above the dark wall) is a nightclub, formerly a Casino. I think it was the first Casino to come to town.
Here's the map pointing to No 124 Seagate

Yes, I recognise some of the street names. For instance
13 Arbroath Road - not too far from Blackscroft, it begins at the junction of Albert Street.
12 Dudcotes Pl, I think should be Dudhope Place - near Dudhope Castle
Nelson Street - is across the Tay river, not sure but I think its called Newport-on-Tay now, or might even be Tayport.
49 Gellatly Street (corrected) is central. It has a big enclosed car park there nowadays. ( see car park 10 on map)
Can't think of a Pudheper Street, perhaps someone else will think of it. There's a Hepburn Street or Peddie Street, springs to mind with me.
137 Seagate is possibly across the road on the odd side.
There is still a Lorimer Street at the West End of city.
I think the last street should read Wedderburn, which is in the north part of the town and is still there.
Here is a link to an old map, hope it helps

Another very useful link for you in helping to trace your ancestors.

Note the telephone number and email address at the bottom of the page. The latter is handy if you want to order books or microfiches for your visit.
The Wellgate Library is situated on the top floor of the Wellgate Centre (see the City Centre Map). You will find the staff are very helpful. There is also computers, usually best to book these too, if necessary.

Just thought I'd mention a large cemetery at the west end of town called Balgay cemetery. I think it should be on the old map I sent you. You can either reach it from travelling up Blackness Road. Or, travel from town along the Perth Road, turn up to the right on reaching Glamis Road and the cemetery is at the top.
However, perhaps it is best to check out some of the links I sent in a pm to you, ie the burial records, rather than aimlessly searching through a huge necropolis.

This picture (http://www.dundeecity.gov.uk/photodb/wc0593.htm) and this one (http://www.dundeecity.gov.uk/photodb/wc0589.htm) may at least give you a feel for the area as it was.
By the way, I have some Flinn/Flynn folks in my line from c mid 1800's Dundee - feel free to PM me with your names and I will check my notes for you.

Great photos Scotmum
You can't get the same feel for what it looked like with all the old buildings gone, so it was good to see the photos to bring back the perspective. The photo of the modern building taken earlier today was taken from the position between the lamp and barrow on your This picture.
Jim, I gave you a bum steer on the placing of Lorimer Street. It is actually to the North of the city, just beyond an area known as The Hilltown. It is also quite near to Wedderburn Place. Both quite closeby Dundee Law.

Jim
Do you have a document with 54 Pudheper Street, that you can post, as I just can't get to grips with what it could be!

Hi My family also lived in Blackscroft. Murphys living at 45 Blackscroft & Ramsays / McLeods living at 40 Blackscroft (at least in 1952). Any help would be great.

Best site for photos of old Dundee around the early 1900s.

The parish of Liff and Benvie came right into what is now the western part of Dundee - for example the Perth Road, so your people are probably not buried outside of the city.
Balgay, Western Necropolis, Lochee road cemetery, St Peter's (Perth road), Constitution Road cemetery (records exist but was built over)

Hi Jim: My family lived on Blackscroft st. in the 1700,1800s. They moved from house to house same street.. Family name of BOYD. I have not been there but have been told its not a residential area anymore. Rose

Hi, I also have lots of family from Dundee, including Blackscroft. I have found the maps collection of the National Library of Scotland to be an absolutely brilliant resource for looking for old addresses. You can join the library online if you live anywhere in Scotland.

Hi
Blackscroft (there is no 'Street' attached to the name), is more or less a traffic thoroughfare nowadays. At the lower end of the area, the Blackscroft library building is still in situ - it became a bar/disco for a while a number of years ago but is now derelict.
At the top end of the area was a huge jute mill called Halleys. Now an empty shell and has been for many years. However, it seems there are current plans to turn this old jute mill into flats, 175 of them altogether:
