Title: Baptism/Birth Lookup Please - BELLAMY
Post by: leam on Sunday 29 October 06 20:00 GMT (UK)
I have traced my Bellamy family back as far as I can on the census records (1851, can't find anything on 1841). Can anyone help me with tracing the baptism record of William Bellamy, born around 1800 in Spalding, Lincolnshire? In 1851 William is listed as a grocer. I am trying to find out if our family were indeed descended from Huguenot refugees which is what we've always been told.
Many thanks Lisa

Yes, I saw that one and wondered myself. It's just that the children seem very young. His son William Thorp(e) Bellamy was born in 1823 in Spalding Lincs. It's not as if he would have married again as Elizabeth (Thorpe) Bellamy lived on a long time after he did.  For instance, in the 1861 census, she is running a grocers shop and my great grandfather (William Bellamy, born 1848) is there with her. Still, I suppose it could be him. Don't know if the 1823 William had brothers or sisters.

At least he was consistent about his age.

Children of Wm and Elizabeth BELLAMY (from IGI) and burial from NBI
William Thorpe (1824)
Charles (1827-28)
Elizabeth Ann (1826-26)
Elizabeth Thorpe (1829-47)
Obviously, these need not all be "yours".

NB:  The William and Elizabeth with daughter Missouri are living in Rutland in 1851, so there are two different families.

I may have found your lot (some of them) in 1841 - same address as 1851

London Road, Spalding
Elizabeth BELLAMY 35
Elizabeth 12

An Elizabeth Thorpe BELLAMY was buried Spalding 1 July 1847 age 18 :(

Yes, that's right. My great great grandfather William Thorpe Bellamy (became a butcher with shop on London Rd) married Mary Ann Colvin of Pinchbeck, Spalding & they had my great grandfather William Thorpe, then Frank (who died as a baby), Elizabeth, Sarah and Ann. Have records on all of them (including marriages) but Ann; last known she was on the 1881 census as a grocer (once again at London Road). After then, who knows? She could have married or even died. So, I'm still on the hunt for the Huguenot connection to see if that string of the Bellamy family were, indeed, descended from Huguenot refugees. I suppose it means tracing back the parish records for great great great great grandfather William born in 1800 (Spalding area?).
