I am looking for the birth or death records of John Gibson who married Margaret Matthie in Kilmarnock on 20 Nov. 1738. They had a son, Robert on 6 March 1748 who in turn married Jean Marshill on 10 June 1768.
Can anyone help me get through this barrier please ?

Hi Danielle
Since John & Margaret's deaths would be before 1855 there would be no formal records of their deaths. Statutory registration of Births, Deaths and Marriages did not begin in Scotland until 1855.
Prior to that date the only records were of births, or more usually christenings, and marriages - again the posting of Banns rather than the actual marriage itself.
Some parishes kept a record of deaths and/or burials. Others kept a record of the hire of mortcloths but these records are patchy across the country.
The most common way to find information about deaths before 1855 is to check Monumental inscriptions once you have established where they lived and which graveyard they might be buried in.
Some Local & Family History Socities have already done some of the work by compiling lists of Deaths, Births, Marriages but you would need to join the society (Most are around £10/year so its not too expensive) or they may sell books or CDs of the records to non-members.

Hello Russell, I'm aware of Scotland's People but It's not complete and I can't locate my folk on it. I'm in the NESFHS and was in the FifeFHS so will probably rejoin this soon. Thanks also for your reply to my enquiry on the Kirkcaldy site, I'm up against a couple of dead ends but am getting a lot of help from Rootschat.
Thanks, Dannielle

Hi Danielle - In the IGI of Familysearch, they give the following:
John Gibson m Margaret Matthie or Sutor 20 Nov 1738 Kilmarnock Ayr.
Oftentimes when there are two names given, it sometimes means that there was a previous marriage.
There is a John Sutar m Margaret Matthie 18 Jun 1728 Kilmarnock Ayr
-Agnes ch 28 Sep 1729 Kilmarnock
The children I could find for John Gibson/Margaret Matthie are:
-John ch 12 Jan 1746 Kilmarnock Ayr
-Robert ch 06 Mar 1748 Kilmarnock Ayr
-Mary ch 29 Mar 1750 Kilmarnock Ayr
-Agnes ch 10 aug 1755 Kilmarnock Ayr
Do you think the entry John Gibson b 04 Jul 1707, ch 13 Jul 1707 Kilmarnock Ayr with father, John m Mary Gaudie (Goudie?) could be the John for whom you are looking?
Blessings Margaret

Hello Margaret, Thank you for your help. I have to tell you however that although I've been battling this one for years, very recent results now convince me that John was not my husband's ancestor!
Deeper delving into the IGI and their families link reveal that one generation earlier a ROBERT GIBSON born in BEITH AYR abt 1743 married JEAN MARSHALL on 10 June 1768 in Kilmaurs. She was born in KILMARNOCK in abt 1747. They went on to have 9 children all born in KILMARNOCK so there should be plenty of GIBSON's about and I'm probably now looking for a ROBERT as the next generation back.
I don't even know where Beith is yet but there seems to be plent to do.
Apologies to all the readers of my previous request and particularly to you Margaret.
Now back to the research!
many thanks,
Dannielle

Margaret!
I didn't read your second note! I've just repeated it back to you haven't I. Thanks for your help, yes, this is the ROBERT born in Beith that I'm now chasing. His first son born 20 Jan 1771 is my downlink.
