Hello

Just saw your message about Barwicks in Wootton Courtenay.
I've got a some information about George Barwick, who was my great-great-grandfather, born Wttn Courtenay in 1830, and his father James born there in 1798.
Are you in South Wales? One of George's brothers (also called James) who was born in Timberscombe, went across the Bristol Channel to work in a colliery near Brigend (Newcastle Higher). In the 1881 census he had three children, Emma, Charles and John, who were all born in Wootton Courtenay, and I know some of them were still there in 1901. There were quite a lot of people from West Somerset working in those mines in the late 1800's, it was after the mines on the Brendon Hills closed that they went over (at least one of of the older generation of Barwicks had worked in the Brendon Hill mines).
Is this what you were looking for? You may have found out all about it now anyway - but let me know if it is what you're after and I'll try to get my notes in order and send to you

Regards

Barbara Thompson

Hello Barbara,

My name is John Barwick I was searching for relatives and ancestors through the internet when I found your message. The James Barwick you refer to in your message is my great great granddad who was born in Timberscome in Somerset in 1843 married lady called Mary whom was born Selworthy Somerset in 1841 I don't know when they moved to S Wales but I know they lived at 3 Fountain Cottages Newcastle Higher, they also had three further children named Mary J, James, and Elizabeth A. I'm afraid James Sr and his son John both perished in the Park Slip colliery disaster in 1892. Can you help me with any more information about my ancestors? Will look forward to hearing from you.
Kind regards
John

Hi John
I found this poem about the disaster ,you may know it ,but I'll write it in case .
It Happened on the Friday 26th August 1892 about 8.20 am ,it was a methane gas explosion
Tears wash down the stone face
Rain upon cold grey
A reminder of that tragedy
That struck that fateful day

Standing in the circle
With tears in their eyes
Are bosses of a company
That tall a thousand lies

Stone on stone piled upwards
each for one a life
Dust filled air ,a huge explosion
today who counts the cost

The price of coal is high
worth far more than men
are we now to see a tragedy
unfolding once again

Pollution -unseen killer
Poisons all our lives
Who will build a pyramid
that reaches to the sky

speak soon.....Marion

Hi

The Elizabeth Barwick (1877) that John refers to who lived in Fountain Cottages was my great great grandmother.   She married Morgan Thomas (1874).  Morgan Thomas had two brothers who also died in the Parc Slip explosion - a very sad day for all but with at least 4 in the family dead, i'd say it was a harrowing time for the Thomas/Barwick family.

I was actually born in the Fountain Inn (the pub next to Fountain Cottages) and my mum still lives in Aberkenfig.  There was a Mrs Barwick at the bottom of her street but she passed away some years back, however she is survived by a daughter and I know they are relatives.

Please let me know if I can help anyone further.
