Title: Edmundstone
Post by: hochiwich on Thursday 11 November 04 15:26 GMT (UK)
Hi,

My interest is in following up my Edmenson family, also recorded as Edmundson, Edmonson etc , which I understand was a corruption of Edmondstone and which came from around Edinburgh.

This part of the family appears to have moved down through Northumberland into Durham and I wonder if anyone has any information on this subject or knows where I can find any.

I have no idea as yet when they came to England, but my great great grandfather was born in Northumberland in 1817.

Hi hochiwich
I have some Edmonstones in my tree but don't know if they are of any interest to you:
James Edmonstone (a shipmaster in Leith who died in October 1825, birth date and parents unknown so far but he had an older unmarried sister called Jean) married Isabella Goalen in N.Leith in 1803. They had two sons I know of, William Edmonstone 1805 and Walter Goalen Edmonstone 1809. I don't know what happened to either of the sons other than Walter was still living in 1831.

Best wishes
Lesley

Thank you. I'll look into those. Though I do wonder if that date of death is correct. He seems to have lived to a very great age!   My Edmensons are long lived on the whole, but not that long  :)

the edmunstones were a wealthy family with lands in the south east area of edinburgh mainly in an area now called Danderhall.  just outside this village is the remains of their mansion house "edmunstone house" probably gifted to them by the crown.  hope this helps

Hi, and thanks for that. I shall certainly be trying to find out more about this side of things. I've traced my family back as far as Amble or Warkworth, where the name was spelled Edmundson, but have hit a brick wall there.

Thanks again for the information.
