Hi
I have a relative in an 1861 census from Plymouth whose occupation appears to be that of a coir fibre mat manufacturer. I would love to hear from anyone who has found a similar occupation in their family.

Hi there,
This is a long shot as I see the original post was years ago, and I stumbled across it browsing the web, but I am also researching Goods in Plymouth and my 3 x great grandfather John Good was a mat maker employing 1 man. Would love to hear from you.
Kind regards

wot an interesting profession..... :)
used to use the stuff as padding over the heshon that covered the springs in some furniture then one would put a cotton layer over that then the final upholstery fabric,
but i didnt realise it could be woven..... guess one learns something everyday...
whilst on the topic of weird weaving..... there was a lot of horse hair weaving in County Norfolk that i came accross a while back in the census....
have fun with your research on that

I'd like to contact you Jill Kelleher as John Good the Mat maker of Plymouth is my great great grandfather too. How can we do this?

Hi Jan,
I hope you get this, as I'm not sure how this site works, but I got an email notification of your request for contact regarding the Good family in Plymouth. My 3x great grandfather was John Good the coir matmaker also and I know very little about him (or the Good family for that matter!),other than what is on the census information. I am related through his son John Carey Good who moved from Plymouth to London, which is where I live now. I have gone back one generation further and know his father was Zechariah Good, but can find no trace of him on any records other than John's marriage certificate. I've been researching on and off for many years and am happy to share any information that I have with you.
Would love to hear from you
Kind regards
