Hi
I have been drawing a blank when it comes to finding anything about my Great Grandfather, Harry Hughesman, pre 1901. ???
Harry , (possibly Henry or Harold, but Harry on the 1901 Census), was born about 1867 and lived in Tunbridge Wells, Kent. The Census entry states he was born in Tunbridge Wells but I can't find anything for him before this. I do know he married Lily (aka Lillie) Streeter, also from Tunbridge Wells. I am wondering whether he might have come from a travelling family?
Thank you so much for any help! :D
Best wishes,
Sue Bryant

Would you have the marriage record to give witness(es), etc?

he married as Harry - not Henry although that doesn't prove his birth name was Harry
Harry Hughesman June quarter 1895 Tonbridge Volume: 2a Page: 1218
This may possibly be his fathers marriage but you need a copy of Harry's marriage cert to confirm his fathers name
Henry Hughsman September quarter 1864 Maidstone
Volume: 2a Page: 780
There are a couple of possible reasons why he is not on the previous censuses
His father may have been in the forces stationed abroad
His father may have died soon after his birth and his mother re-married. He may be entered on censuses under her new married name
He may have been illegitimate and then his mother married and he may be entered on censuses under her married name
Have you checked the full GRO index for his birth?
You can now search the full GRO index yourself free of charge at
http://www.ancestry.co.uk/search/rectype/vital/freebmd/bmd.aspx Choose “Complete BMD Index Ranges & Images 1837-1983
If you only have a dial up internet connection and you live in the UK, you may find it easier to view the same index at your nearest main library as the images take a while to download. If you have broadband, they only take a few seconds
The partially transcribed index (freebmd) can also be searched on the same website or at http://freebmd.rootsweb.com

Hi Sue
Welcome to Rootschat
Yes, I would thoroughly recommend getting a copy of the marriage certificate too - and hope that it will give you further clues as to his origins. It could even be that the information on his birthplace for the 1901 census is incorrect if it was given by somebody else (his wife perhaps?) who wasn't quite sure where he was born :-\

Hi Sue,
Henry Thomas Hughesman b. Oct. Q. 1858 Malling Kent (includes Aylesford)
Henry Thomas Hughesman died July Q.1912 Tonbridge
In 1871, Henry (born Aylesford c. 1859)
was living with parents Robert and Jemima Hughesman
Robert Hughesman married Jemima Dobell who was born in 1833 at Maidstone
Jemima's parents were Nathaniel Dobell and Sarah Goodwin
I just read the Will of my 4th g. grandfather Amos Dobell and discovered he
had sons I didn't know about.........Nathaniel and Benjamin.
This led me to find Nathaniel's marriage to Sarah Goodwin.
My 3rd. g. grandmother was Mary Dobell daughter of Amos and his first wife Mary Farmer.
Amos married a second time to Mary Poulter and I knew they had a daughter Martha.
Nathaniel and Sarah had sons Alfred Poulter Dobell, and Sydney Goodwin Dobell,
so Nathaniel must have been a son of Mary Poulter.
Nathaniel died at Maidstone in 1832 so I don't have him on a census record.
Just found this today so more work to be done........just thought I'd post it in case
you had not yet solved your mystery.
Regards,
Foxglove

Hi again,
Just wanted to add that on the 1911 census
still in Tunbridge Wells District
Henry's year of birth is c. 1860
which is more accurate.
