Hi Brad,
Think it's probably right and John was born 'out of wedlock' :o
Found them in 1851:
HO107/1729 fol.288 p.15 Merton, Bicester, Oxfordshire
Gorge STANDFORD Head Marr 65 Ag. Lab Oxon. Merton
Gorge " Son Marr 27 Ag. Lab " "
Ann " Daur Wife Marr 25 " Yarnton
John SAVINS Son 2 " "
(spellings as in census)
Free bmd has two births for John Savin both in the Bicester district, Dec 1848 and Jun 1850, first one seems most likely

NOW THAT MUCH OF MY STANFORD FAMILY IS COMING TOGETHER CAN ANYBODY HELP FIND THE MARRIAGE OF GEORGE STANFORD TO MARY ? WITH CHILDREN SARAH,GEORGE ,REBECKA,JANE ANN AND THOMAS. THESE ARE ON THE 1841 CENSUS AS IN MERTON OXFORDSHIRE. THANKS.

Hi Brad and Barbara
I have come up with the same line as this, although I can not find how or why John Savins Stanford ended up with Davis on the end of his name. Or why he came to NZ, I am researching down the line of John's brother George Stanford., although I am also running into problem that Johns mother Ann may have married a William Savins and that is Johns father then married George Stanford . making John the stepson, but again the Davis comes up and not sure how.
Any help or information would be greatly appreciated.

NOW THAT MUCH OF MY STANFORD FAMILY IS COMING TOGETHER CAN ANYBODY HELP FIND THE MARRIAGE OF GEORGE STANFORD TO MARY ?
Hi all
I have been watching this thread as it gets closer to my tree.
I have just run a couple of searches and there is no George anyone marrying in Merton listed in the OFHS Marr Index that is remotely close to the parents of John.
I have the marriages of the siblings just like you have found Sue but not the parents George Stanford and a Mary unknown.
As there does not appear to be a match in Oxfordshire and because Merton is right on the boarder to Buckinghamshire it may be worth a post on the Buckinghamshire board for a marriage between George and Mary circa 1819 onwards as their 1st born seems to be Elizabeth in 1816 ?
The baptisms and other entries I have put below are all from St Swithins Church, Merton PR's. OFHS CD BIC01.
This looks like the baptism for George albeit the last name has another spelling variation;
2 Sept 1789 George StOnford baseborn s Peeney
There is no other entry of such a last name as Peeney or variants in Mertons PR's but there are many across the eastern side of Oxfordshire in other parishes near Merton.
Baptisms for George and Marys children appear to be:
Elizabeth baptised 22 Dec 1816
John baptised 17 Jan 1819 Buried 6 July 1832
Sarah baptised 20 Aug 1820
John baptised 28 Dec 1823 this is correct but odd as the previous John was still alive?
Rebecca baptised 23 April 1826
Eliza baptised 21 Dec 1828
Jane baptised 18 Sept 1831
Ann baptised 8 Dec 1833
Thomas baptised 11 June 1837
Hope this all helps in some way

it appears that my John Savins came to New Zealand and changed his name to Davis ....I believe he jumped ship but which one I have no idea. The name Stanford is included in all his children names and even the girls and often the name was Stanford -Davis. he died at the age of about 90about 1930 and buried in Alfredton in New Zealand. John married a Phoebe Peagram also from UK and they had about 15 children. i hope this clears the mystery up about him coming to New Zealand.
