Hi, I would like to know if there are any microfiche or CDs that I can buy containing the records of the Greystoke Parish specifically from 1680 up until about 1750?.

I have an interest in Gill, Ainstable and Greystoke as I am researching the NICHOLSON family.

Hi ainstable, my search is for the children of Thomas Gillbanks and Grace Virtue who married at Greystoke in 1685, I have been unable to find any deaths for them, or marriages for their children, Frances Christened 23 Dec. 1686, John Christened 20 March 1688, and especially Isaac Christened 6 September 1691. I believe Isaac may be my missing link. It is funny that my furthest ancestor that I can trace by paper is Isaac Gillbanks who also used the name Banks, supposedly born Town End, Broughton in Furness, but can find no record of his birth or marriage there, a clue to his link with Greystoke may be that his children were Thomas, John, Grace and Isaac. Another theory is that Isaac really was a Banks, who married Margaret Gill, and that they joined the names making Gillbanks. Jim.

I don't know if the following would be of any assistance. The index to the Diocese of Carlisle marriage licences has the following entry:
25 Nov 1740
Gilbank (sig Gill Bank) John, Manisty p Crosthwaite yeoman
Wren Margaret, Hollis p Crosthwaite
bondsman: Youdell Gawin, Hollis, yeom
marriage to take place at Crosthwaite
That's probably o/s your timeframe but the split signature caught my eye. There are marriage licences for Gilbanks from the same place in 1738 and 1749.
There is a marriage licence of a William Gillbanks of Red Sykes in Matterdale, p Graystock in 1747. Plus some later ones.
I can't find an Isaac Gill or Gilbanks.

Hi Deborah, thanks for replying, the split in the name ie Gill Bank is certainly in keeping with my records from my branch of the family, which is very interesting, which does suggest there may be a connection, the lack of any mention of Thomas, Grace, or there children in any registers leave me to conclude they left the county, or indeed the country, if not they should be there somewhere. You mention you have Marriage Licences for other Gillbanks', any information will be gratefully received. BTW, Jonathon Vertue (Grace's brother) was also known as Bank, he married Jane Bank.

Hi Deborah, Sorry, I am afraid I gave you wrong information, It was not Jonathon but Thomas who married Jane Bank, Jonathon was their son, who was known by both names.

The marriage licences really start in earnest in 1699 - too late for the Gillbank/Vertue marriage.
The first mention of Gilbank (and variants) is unfortunately an incomplete bond:
blank date but reference to George Secundi ... tertio so between 11 Jun 1728 and 10 June 1729

Hi Deborah, thanks for taking the time to post, yes John could be the same man, alternatively, if that Gillbanks family were like my branch, the same names repeat within each family, which could mean more than one family living in the area, do you know whether Manesty was a hamlet or a farm? Have just been on www.familysearch.org and John and Jane did marry on 6 April 1738, but could find no trace of Jane's death, so I must presume the two Johns were seperate people. Both of these John's could be in the frame(timewise) for John born 1688, it's a pity registers at that time didn't include ages, or father's name. Have just received your other post, and am overjoyed to note theat Anges used the name Banks on the document, this is so heartening, I think I am on the right track knowing that this Gillbanks also used the Banks name. Looking at the other document for 1749 where John splits the name is a further clue. The 1717/18 Licence for Thos. Fenton and Frances Gill is interesting, she could be Frances born 1686, but have no proof that the family ever used the name Gill, although until a few years ago never knew they used Banks either. You're welcome and I hope you do manage to connect the dots.
There were a lot of Gill entries so I only transcribed that one of the several I looked at. It would take too long to transcribe them all (and mostly they didn't 'seem' to be yours) but if you can narrow down with christian names, periods and places I can provide the details of those too.

Hi Deborah, I am grateful for your offer, the obvious ones would be Thomas and Grace along with their children Frances, John, and Isaac. As you know, I beleive Isaac moved down to the Furness area where he raised his family. His local church records start in the middle 1660s and there are no entries for a baptism or marriage for him in it. I read a book which details his difficulty in buying a farm at Torver in 1729, and as he already had a farm at Broughton the locals demanded proof of his settlement, this was over-ruled though, what a pity, it would have proved where he was born. If proof that Isaac was the son of Thomas and Grace, I could then trace back to the 1500s. Any Gill marrying a Banks would obviously change the situation. Regards, Jim.

Would anyone have any info about my 6th great grandfather, His name was John Lowther(afraid no date of birth) he lived in Greystoke in Cumberland now Cumbria, there he fathered two children Jeremiah b19 Nov 1702 abd his sister Dorothy 21 Sep 1704. both of GREYSTOCK MILNE. both I asume born in Greystoke. It would help me a lot because I live only 12 miles from Greystoke, I am also trying to find the name of his wife.. Any assist you guys can give would be most welcome..
