Title: 1861 Census flaws - Workington
Post by: Celtic Mongrel on Thursday 19 October 06 10:39 BST (UK)
While the census is considered a valuable tool for many, I have discovered many omissions of my family in a number of them.

In 1861, the family of John and Jane Nichol cannot be found anywhere in England, yet they must have been living in Workington, as Jane gave birth to a son at Brewery Row, Workington, just two months later.

According to the census, Brewery Row does not exist!

Anyone know anything about Brewery Row?

Sheila ???

It may be that the sheets for Brewery Row did not survive. There are sheets missing from Frizington too (with my relatives).

The description of Enumeration District 14 mentions High Brewery, though a quick scan of the addresses does not give a mention of the place.

It's not unknown for people to have been transcribed to the census book and been given a neighbour's surname.

Check all John + Jane couples in the district to see if birthplaces, ages etc. match with your couple.

Thanks for those.
My grandmother and one of her sisters and one of her brothers are missing from the 1901 census as well.
I reckon you just can't trust them!

Brewery Row was part of Griffen Street and was demolished in the 1960's. If you look you will find your family in 126 Griffen St 1851, I have copies for you of the sheets from 1851-1861-1871. i have never been on one of these sites before so don't know how you will get in touch with me so I can post the info to you??
