Hi
I have discovered my great grandparents John Moreland and his wife Mary (ms Cunningham) lived at Hallcraig Houses, Carluke during the 1881 Census.
Does anyone know if any houses called Hallcraig still exist? Or, would anyone possibly have old photos of this area in Carluke?
Many thanks in advance

No photos I'm afraid, but go to Get-a-map (www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/getamap), click on "I want to get-a-map now !",enter Carluke, and you'll see Hallcraig on the left.
The 1998/99 Postal Address Book has Hallcraig Place, the postcode being ML8 5UJ. If you Google "Hallcraig" you'll find that it seems to be associated with a golf-course.

Perhaps you are already aware that Hallcraig House, a mansion it would seem, existed in Carluke in the 1800's and that it may have been owned by the Cunningham family in the mid 1840's.
In the 1890's, there is record of a pit by the name of Hallcraig in Carluke, owned by Coltness Iron Company of Newmains, perhaps this was there from earlier and the Hallcraig Houses were occupied by miners and their families. Do you have an occupation for John Moreland that may bear this out?

'Thank You' both Bervonian and Scotmum
Bervonian - I went into the Get A Map but just saw the name Hallcraig which seemed be in the countrside to the left of Carluke as you look on, but it is good to find its location. I also 'Googled' the name and it did mention a golf course but no photos to be seen!! Where can I find a photo, I wonder!!!
Scotmum - I wonder what happened to the fate of the Cunningham family? My relative is likely a different one. It only gives John Moreland's occupation as a Labourer on the 1881 Census, with no mention of where he worked. So it is interesting to learn of the pit named Hallcraig, with the houses being occupied by miners and their families. This deserves some further investigation.

Hiya Atom!
If you go to: http://www.rcahms.gov.uk , register (free), go to Pastmap, (I think you might have to register here also) and key in Hallcraig . . . you should eventually get to a map showing what looks like a wee row of houses. Possibly Hallcraig Houses?
Just in case you can't find it, please contact me by PM and I will assist further.

Hi apanderson
Thank you for the link for a map of Hallcraig. After registering it took me a wee while to get the hang of the zooming feature but I eventually got there and spotted which could well be the row of houses.
So I wonder if that means there could possibly be a chance that Hallcraig Houses are still standing today!

Hi Atom,
I'm from a long line of Cunninghams in the Carluke area (have back to the late 1600s documented). If you need help with that side of your family, I may be able to help you. if you ever find pics of Hallcraig, let me know! :) I will get back to you as well if I find anything.

Thanks for the latest information.
I'm not sure if my Cunningham is from the area! More likely to be from Ireland.
I have just seen the photo of Hallcraig House on the Carluke website today.
And, I am just away to look up the Carluke webpage on Facebook.
Best
Anne :)

Hi Atom,
If you come across a copy of "Bygone Carluke", published by Stenlake, there is a photo there of Hallcraig House, with a little bit of history also. For more info, you could also contact the Carluke Parish Historical Society in Hamilton St, Carluke, contact Christine Warren.
