Title: Parish Records Newlyn East
Post by: Celtic Mongrel on Tuesday 17 October 06 20:10 BST (UK)
Hi, I would like some information on the christening entry for Edwin Hawkey, who was born about 1848 in Newlyn East.
Also a William Hawkey, who according to census returns was born in Newlyn East about 1790.
Thanks,
Sheila

Oh how sad Sheila :'(

Burial Newlyn East

HAWKEY Jane of Tendreen aged 2 Years 11 Nov 1825

The same date as the second Jane was baptised. Presume you Edwin's mother could not have been very old or her name surely would not have been Jane.  :-\ I wonder if the death of one child brought on the birth of the next  :'(  :'(  :'(

Can't see a burial for the first James

Hello Kris,
Thanks for that information.
I'm not sure that the William Hawkey you found was the right one.
Robert made a will in 1804 but William was not mentioned.
William's status did not fit in with the rest of the family, who were "gentlemen"!
Was there a William Hawkey who died in the 1790's?
I did think that the parish records may have given some indication of who Edwin's father was.
Thanks again.
Sheila

Hi Sheila, Unfortunately the parish records generally don't seem to say much re illegitimate children. This one does state single woman....some don't even say that.  :'(

Re William.....Ooh I think you are right. I see 2 burials....the first in particular looks suspicious just 4 days after the baptism  :-\ Unfortunately not helpful entries either.

HAWKEY William 7 Sep 1891

also

HAWKEY William (a pauper) 9 Nov 1895

MMM I have just trawled that 10 year period 1785-1795 again. Sorry to have to report there is no other William Hawkey registered in Newlyn.  :'(  :'(  :'(

Do you know much about the Hawkey's from the area in general? The St Enoder Church Bells have been lowered for restoration. The largest of the bells was found to contain 3 names, The Rev William Horsburgh and churchwardens Flamank and Hawkey. http://saint-enoder-bells.blogspot.com/ Watching the video where the Bell was turning around I got a really good view of the names and the name appears to be T M Hawkey. Had a look about for him. Would suspect he is a part of the family of William and Emalyn Hawkey. William was from St Dennis. Emalyn was from Roche. They had Children in Roche including Thomas Henry in 1869 who is married to Laura in St Enoder in 1901. I thought if that must be him but couldn't explain the M. Then following up on the family they go from Roche to St Col Major and end up in St Enoder where Father William is noted as a Farmer. They farmed at Trewinion Farm St Enoder and I see Thomas Henry had a brother Morice Theopilus Hawkey born St Columb Major 1876. By 1901 he lists as Maurice T Hawkey farmers son. Still unwed at this time. I  see a lot of our ancestors switching their first and middle names about. The Rev Horsburgh buried the father William in 1909 and his mother in 1918. I cannot find burials in St Enoder up to 1945 for either Thomas Henry or Morice Theophilus. Pity as William Horsborough and Richard Flamank's burial's list there connection to the Church.

Of course he may not connect to your Hawkey's but thought I would mention it anyway. If you are in Cornwall you may like to take a look at the Bell up close.....Wish I could.  :'( .....Kris  :'(

Thanks.

I think most of the Hawkey's in that area are related, and are descended from William, though a fair number of his descendents, like many others from the area, emigrated.
I have discovered cousins in Canada, Australia, South Africa and the USA. I'm not in Cornwall, but south west Wales, and am unable to travel anywhere at the moment.

Thanks Sheila,

It was just a bit of a coincidence really. I had been looking about for the name on the bell trying to see if there may be some descendents and then you request Hawkey in the area. I was quite excited by the discovery and when I saw your request wondered if you may have connected and been nearby.  I should have looked at your profile.  :-[

Best Wishes........Kris  :D

Sheila,

I was just looking for something in St Col Major and I noticed

HAWKEY William baptised 23 Oct 1795 Parents John and Rebecca

I wonder  :-\

PS: Should have checked the census before posting. I see a William aged 40 married to Grace in 1841. I tried 1851 and sorry to report the Husband of Grace now lists as age 56 b St Col  :'( So looks like he is this one....pity  :'(

Following your chap through the census he appears consistant with a birth in Newlyn 1890/1. Unfortunately it just is not in the register  :'(

Here are William and Jenifer's burials in Newlyn East

HAWKEY Jenefer of (Butto)? 23 Oct 1856 aged 56 years
HAWKEY William of Church Town 30 Oct 1870 aged 79 years (A S Sporner officiating minister. There is a note to this entry: entered from certificate of death by me Wm Arthur Lees - Wm Arthur Lees appears to have taken over as the minister for a short time, and no furthuer entries by A S Sporner - so I presume it means A S Sporner performed the service but Wm Arthur Lees entered it in the register - guess for some reason A S Sporner could not enter it himself so this had to be noted)

Cheers Kris  :D
