Title: Any Knowledge of this Ipswich Photographer
Post by: bobo66 on Monday 16 October 06 20:43 BST (UK)
Does anyone have any knowledge of a photographer known as BUOGHTONS working at 25 Westgates Ipswich.
I have a photograph taken about 1890-1900 of one of my Great Grandfathers, but I don't know which one. Does anyone know of any records which might still exist. I have anumber on the photo '36694'
Any help at all would be appreciated.

Thanks

Derek

best bet is to try Suffolk Records Office In Ipswich,

looking on the http://www.historicaldirectories.org

Gazetteer & Directory of Suffolk, 1891-2 states 25 Westgate Street Ipswich as The Grosvenor (public house) although it looks as if there may have been room rented above the pub as i also found a dentist listed at the same address.
In the kellys directory of 1900
W Boughton and sons (photographers ) are listed at 24 buttermarket Ipswich

I have a picture of a man, probably my grandfather, in RAMC WW1 field uniform. The picture has the inscription 'Boughtons, 25, Westgate St, Ipswich'. The serial number - written in pencil on the back - is A 27697.

The Grosvenor apparently didn't last much beyond 1912. Though as you say there may have been rooms rented above the pub.

I have a photograph of my father which I think may have been taken about 1935. On the back is 'JAMES W HOWARD, (late Boughton's) 25 Westgate Street, IPSWICH'.
When I was a bridesmaid in 1953, I recall going to Howard's Studio to have the wedding photographs taken. The studio was on the first floor.

Hi - found this in passing and may well be too late. But: if you have access to that big commercial site, check out gnboreham's family tree - photo of Fred and Charlotte Leader and family has a strong resemblance.

I am researching an ancestor named James William Howard who was a photographer at Boughtons 25 Westgate. Unsure when he worked there, but it would have been after 1901.

I have found while researching that brothers Thomas R and Walter Boughton seem to be the owners, they had many studios all over Norfolk and Suffolk throughout the years.

If you visit the website earlyphotostudios.uk you can find out more information.

Hope this might be helpful

As yet, there has been no response to my 2018 posting on Ancestry's (formerly RootsWeb's) Suffolk Message Board: Dating photographs from the studios of James W. Howard in Ipswich (https://www.ancestry.co.uk/boards/localities.britisles.england.sfk.general/9098). Perhaps RootsChat will bring more contributors, either here or there.

I was hoping that additional examples of numbered prints would provide a better guide than these few from my archives:

32742 by Boughtons of Ipswich apparently taken about 1920

58976 by James W. Howard (late Boughton's) dated 1 August 1931

71146 by James W. Howard and Son dated November 1939

Another useful photograph by James W. Howard has now come to light: number 54656 (https://www.ancestry.co.uk/boards/localities.britisles.england.sfk.general/9098.2?viewType=TREE_VIEW), taken on 3 August 1929. This was almost exactly two years before number 58976, making an average of about 2,170 per annum. The rate of production appears to have halved by the end of the 1930s.
