Title: Bulls Head Inn, Dale Street, Ossett
Post by: ScottishAncestry on Saturday 14 October 06 22:21 BST (UK)
Hi everybody,

I am really excited as I have just made a new discovery. My Great Great Great Grandfather John Lockwood, born 1831 in Lepton has just turned up in Ossett in the 1871 census. Now up until today I have had him down as a shoe maker but in the 1871 census he is down as a Publican of the Bulls Head Inn, Dale Street, Ossett which if I'm honest is much more interesting! ;D

Now I have been to http://www.old-maps.co.uk/ and have found it on there but I can't seem to find any reference to it being still in existence. Do any of you lovely people know if it is still there perhaps as a different name?

I would be very greatfull for any information :-*

Emma

Hi Emma
Any idea what number Dale Street? I found the Horse & Jockey at number 18 on 'beer in the evening' pub guide. Seems Ossett has lots of pubs! There is a little Bull? Maybe yours has changed name?
Cheers
JK

Hi, I am new to this forum, and find it to be a fantastic place - why did I not find this before?!

Here is a pic of the Bulls Head Inn, Ossett. It closed at the end of 1937, and was demolished in 1972. I have a Gamwell Cudworth as licensee in 1867, John Lockwood in 1870 and George Beevers in 1873. John Lockwood was charged with permitting drunkenness on 11 Oct 1870 and fined for permitting drunkenness in licensed premises on 2nd Aug 1872. Hope this is of interest and helps with dates.

Thank you so much! This is great! I haven’t done much with my own family for so long but this has really spurred me on to get back to it. Where did you find the records about him permitting drunkenness? – wait till I tell my grandfather!!

If you ever need anything in the Scottish records please let me know so I can return the favour.

Thanks again,

Emma

Excellent - I am glad it was of help. I have been researching the Ossett Observer newspaper for years, but this info came from a local book recently published by the local historical society. Any more info needed on the pub please let me know.

It's great to be of help - I really enjoy my research, and get a real kick out of sharing what I find. Most of my research is local history (Ossett, West Yorkshire), but inevitably this leads to researching people now and again. I have a couple of people who I need info about and would happily accept help on them, I will post a "wanted" request later...

Keep up the good work admin - you're doing an excellent job with this site!  :)

Hi Emma & Nevthedigger

I came across this thread because I was also researching the Bull's Head in Ossett. We are related to George Beevers who took over from John Lockwood.
Emma, In the "Sheffield & Rotherham Independent" of 12th March 1873, John Lockwood of the Bull's Head Inn, Ossett is declared bankrupt.

I would be interested in any other information about the Beevers family in Ossett. George Beevers took over the Bull's Head in 1873 but by 1881 he was innkeeper at the Three Horseshoes, Bentley, Doncaster. Then. in the 1891 census, his widow Emma is back managing the Bull's Head.

Best wishes
Sue

Here is what I have of the Beevers:

George Henry Beevers was landlord in 1873, and in 1878 it was taken by William Saxton. In 1888 it went back to G H Beevers again, and then Emma Beevers in 1890. She kept it til 1894 when George Scott became landlord.

A little bit of info: In March 1878 George Henry Beevers was fined £2 plus costs for permitting drunkenness in licensed premises.

Thank you very much for that. It will help me to pinpoint where the family were living at various times. It seems as if there was quite a bit of drunkenness in Ossett!
Another unrelated branch of the family- the Swallows, lived in Ossett around 1850-1860. I don't think they did anything to get into the papers though.

Thanks again
Sue

Hmm ... the name Joshua Swallow rings a bell ... I'll have a look later when I'm at home.

(The drunkenness - thankfully - is a thing of the past ... not least to do with the fact that half of the pubs have closed down since the Vict. era!)

There are two Joshua Swallows in my family tree (father and son). I hope it is one of them.

This will be a new line of research for me.
Many thanks

No probs - when I have time (ha ha!) I will look through the earlier directories for Ossett in the 19th century to see what else comes up.

Thank you all so much for all this information. I have not done anything on this part of my family for ages; I’ll have to dig a bit further with this one I like a bit of scandal in the family!!

Hi all, another Bull's Head spinoff... William Saxton is in my tree. At 1881 spring census he was listed as an Innkeeper at Bank Street. Bull's Head is named on Bank Street on 1893 map, but no pubs down Dale St - were there two, or did part of Dale St become Bank St? He died in 1889 the year after he gave up the pub. By 1891 his widow Harriet Walker is back on rag sorting. I have a photo of daughter Ada Saxton > Ada Gawthorpe c.1907. If you have details on any of these folks I'd be pleased to hear them.

Actually I came here looking for Joshua Swallow. My gggrandad Arthur Clayton was an overlooker at Bottomfield Mill (mungo). The story goes that the mill passed to some spinster sisters the Misses Ward (dtrs of Joseph Ward) who gave over the business to him. His dtr-in-law used to tell me that he was a drinker and couldn't hold it together (must have caused some family resentment given the opportunities in the Great War boom). However I found out today that Arthur was trading as "Joshua Swallow & Son" at nearby Paleside Mill with some chap called Fawcett until this partnership was wound up in 1915. So maybe Joshua Swallow and his son William Andrew Swallow had had to give up their family business. In 1899 Wm A was executing his mother's will as if there would be creditors against it (London Gazette) but he was still in business until at least 1901 - census shows him lodging near the mill while his wife Mary had moved to Low Laithes.

Pale Side Mill was advertised as "To sell or let" in the Leeds Mercury by Joshua Swallow at the beginning of 1896.
In 1901, William Andrew Swallow was lodging next door to Joseph Ward so perhaps they were in partnership or something like that?

The Misses Ward paid for the bells (or was it the clock?) in the new Town Hall which was opened in 1908 when they lived at Bottomfield House. I will look in my Ossett directories for the Swallow name sometime in the next day or two.
Dale Street extended past the Bull's Head, and part of it was known as Bank Street. Today the two are clearly defined ... the site of the pub is now classed as Bank Street.

Paleside mill   Dewsbury Road Ossett

I am trying to find out more about the above mill.

Does it still exist? if so where in Ossett is it?.

Any pictures or information greatly appreciated.

It doesn't exist any longer, the area is now a modern industrial estate with no remains of previous buildings. If I may quote from Steve Wilson's excellent website www.ossett.net ...

Paleside Mill
The mill located on Dewsbury Road, Ossett was built originally by Joshua Swallow, probably in the 1860s or 1870s for the prime purpose of cloth finishing. By 1881 Paleside Mill had been converted for rag grinding and spare capacity with on-site dyeing facilities was being offered to let by Swallow.1 The mill was subsequently put up for sale in 1892, but was withdrawn from auction after not being sold.2 Another similar advertisement appeared in 1895 with the mill being offered for sale or to let.3 It is not known if the mill was sold in 1895, but by 1901 the buildings were occupied by Bickle Brothers, rag merchants and mungo manufacturers together with J & G Lawrence, mungo manufacturers.4

2. "Ossett Observer", 19th March 1892
3. "Ossett Observer", 7th December 1895

wow, what a quick reply. Really appreciate that.

In the light of your response I see I should have asked a different question.

The existing building at 170 Dewsbury Road looks as though it was used for some sort of textile processing.

Does anybody know anything at all about its history prior to it being used to sell car audio and alarms?

Thanks in anticipation,

Actually there are some old industrial buildings up that way which I forgot about ... what would I know  :-[ he he he

I'll have a look for 170 Dewsbury Road and see if I have anything on it.
