Hi
I need a census look-up for anyone named BACKWAY or variants (could have had cockney accent) in 1841 or 1851 census. Writing looks on certificate like BARKWAY
Elizabeth Backway married in Broughton BKM 1846 father no name listed - just dead!
Mother Jane (Ellis) father unknown carpenter. She was born London- (Aussie death certificate)
Any help with anyone with that name in the vicinity would be appreciated. Her husband to be was resident in Newport Pagnell
Thanks
Liz

Family search has a marriage:
16 September 1815 Christ Church Greyfriars Newgate
James Backway to Jane Ellis
-
1841: HO107/698/13
St John Hackney London Orphan Asylum
Eliza Backway 12 yrs born abt 1829
This is from the index - I have searched the pages several times and cannot find her on them - I don't know what to think - is it my eyesight??
-
Hi Heywood
Thanks for all of the searching! I knew about the Jane Ellis marriage but could not be sure it matched as I did not know Elizabeth's father's name.
The orphan asylum is a bit of a shock! But unsure if that is her as the age does not match as her age from all of the other sources has her born around 1821. Funny that she is on the index but not the pages isn't it? Unless it was a typo and they had her age round the wrong way eg 12 instead of 21
I expected that she might not be with her mother as she is old enough to be employed at 21, and is a servant at time of marriage in Broughton 1846. I think the Jane Backway the greengrocer could be her mother. Where is Mile End Old Town? Is that in BKM or London?
Thanks Liz
-
It is London- I am not a Londoner so not sure but it is East End I think- if you 'google' it you can get lots of information - very poor area I think.
I am glad you replied and made me look again- I was just checking areas to get your info and noticed that in the indexes there is an Eliza born 1829 in the 1851 so that would not be yours.
I thought too that perhaps Jane would be her mother. I have tried to find any misrepresentations of Backway for 1841 for Elizabeth but no joy. Had they left England by 1851? (I was thinking that if she was in 1851 census she may give her birthplace which might help.
good luck
heywood
PS there is also a marriage- 1812, a James to a Jane Kempster. If you are sure that Elizabeth's mother is Jane Ellis, then at least you can be fairly sure of her father's name through that marriage.
-
Hi Heywood
Thanks for all that info and for all the checking.
In 1851 Elizabeth and her husband James Faulkner were living in London, though I did have someone in London RC check the address on my great grandmother's birth certificate dated 23/8/1851 which was 29 Richard St Limehouse. And they weren't there, so close in time. And every one of the children born were in a different area of London so they must have been moving quite a bit. They married 1/6/1846 in Broughton and first child James Henry Faulkner was born in Sept quarter in London.
Certificate of death in Qld gave lots of detail which is where I got the Jane Ellis, though for father it only had Backway no name, on that. Her youngest son gave the information, place birth London.
They emigrated to Tasmania in 1855, and her age then on ship record was 32, but that may have been age when they left as children's ages were out by one year each.
Thanks
Liz

Hi Liz,
this is why I asked you for those names- puzzling and wonder what you think?
1851 HO107; Piece: 1552; Folio: 609; Page: 25
32 Wellington Place Mile End Old Town
Henry Harris head 59 yrs carman sawyer b Staffordshire
Jane Harris wife 58 yrs b St Georges East
Maria Harris daur 15 yrs b Stepney
Henry Harris son 13 yrs ditto
James Faulkner son in law 25 yrs Bucks
Elizabeth daur 29 yrs St Georges East
John grandson 4 yrs Stepney
Jane Laurence grandson (age is is female column) 8 yrs Stepney
James Faulkner grandson 4 yrs Stepney
These seem to be the best fit! Henry does not have a wife with him in 1841 so I am wondering if Jane Harris is Jane Backway?
-
Hi Heywood
Excellent sleuthing there!
Yes that does fit doesn't it? Baby John's age bit off but baby James fits. Ages of James their father at 25 close enough as does Elizabeth at 29. Son-in-law would be right if the father saw Elizabeth as his daughter.
Next thing to look for is marriage of Jane. I suppose it would be in her name of Jane Ellis not Backway, not sure of how that worked? Sometime after 1820, I guess. I will check that on the IGI now.
Is there any occupation for either James or Elizabeth on the census or is that only the head that that was put in for?
Thanks so much
Liz
-
Sorry!! James is the sawyer and Henry is the carman!
no other jobs- Henry has several children in 1841 - including an Elizabeth born 1831 - all very difficult!
The more I seem to look- the more problems/ puzzles occur.
-
I can't believe this - just when I thought it was all going pear shaped- there is the marriage (possible anyway)
Jane Backway and Henry Harris 1841 4th quarter East London vol 2 pg 170!
so you will be able to send for that.
best wishes
heywood

That is really excellent sleuthing! Well done! There is no way I would have worked that out. It has to be the right one!
And my James was a Sawyer!
Can you tell me can you order certificates on line. I am in Qld Australia. Last time I ordered certificates it was through the local Family History society (10 years ago!)
Thanks
Liz

I think it's all on here: http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/
I was getting so confused! There are two entries for a Jane Harris (within 2 yrs within 2 yrs birth years) for 1861. One is with Henry - the other with a Jane Lawrence (from 1851). She is listed as 'wife's mother' for a William John Godsalve Crosse (!!) and his wife Mary Ann. (There are also 2 entries for him- one with Mary Ann and another as a nephew!)
I looked this marriage up - a Mary Ann Bridger (oh no I thought - another marriage!)
However eventually I found that Mary Ann Backway was married same quarter and year- checked this out with Family Search and it is her!
Jane must be on the census twice- perhaps only staying there a couple of nights.
I'm so glad that it has worked out and hope you get it the certificate.
best wishes
Kath
PS if you go to Ancestry.co.uk and search free BMD there is a link for certificates online besides the one I gave.

Thanks so much for all your help

Just to clarify last message - are you saying that in 1861 census the daughter of Jane Backway (Harris) is the Mary Ann married to William Godsalve Crosse?
And that Mary Anne (Backway) had her mother was listed there and that Jane Harris was also listed with her and with husband Henry Harris too?
This is the same Mary in 1841 as a child aged 10 with Jane Backway right?
And that you found marriage of Mary Ann Backway to William Godsalve Crosse?
I still don't have Elizabeth in 1841 do I?
She seems to be a missing person.
Looks like Jane the greengrocer was living very close to where she lives in 1851 with Henry Harris.

Hello - yes (I think- will have to check ages)
Family Search (IGI)
William John Godsalve Crosse to Mary Ann Backway 17 December 1857 St Peter's Stepney
Ancestry free BMD
William John Godsalv- Crosse Mile End OLd Town 1857 4th quarter Vol 1c pg 90
others on page - Mary Ann Bridger
However - Ancestry free bmd
Mary Ann Backway 1857 4th quarter Mile End Old Town vol 1c pg 984
Have checked the image and William should read pg 984!
1861 census
RG9; Piece: 1072; Folio: 118; Page: 2
Berwick House Rainham Essex
William J G Crosse 27 yrs nephew Merchant clerk born St George East
is staying with Henry G Crosse (unmarried) gent
there are others there including a John T G Crosse and John H Newman - both nephews
however at RG9; Piece: 298; Folio: 112; Page: 13
46 ST Peter's Road mile End Old Town
William J G Crosse occ. fundholder - same age/ birth is the head
Mary Ann wife 30 yrs b Stepney
Mary Ann G 2 yrs b Mile End
Eliza F G 6 months b Mile End
Jane Harris 67 yrs householder wife's mother b St George's East
Jane Laurence niece 17 yrs b Whitechapel
Elizabeth Dell servant 14 yrs b Stepney
BUT
Class: RG9; Piece: 292; Folio: 90; Page: 18
32 Wellington Road Mile End Old Town
Henry Harris 70 yrs carman b ?? Herts
Jane Harris 67 yrs householder b St George's East
there is a Henry and Rosanna Garnet and family with them I think possibly
Later I think the young Mary Ann Crosse becomes a servant so they perhaps fall on hard times.
I 'googled' re Godsalve Crosse and there is an article abolut Rainham and the family.
Well I think that's all
good luck

Hi Roger
Are you part of the same Backway family mentioned in this thread?
I have very little information on this family, so I am unable to help you otherwise, but I hope Roger from England can :D

Thanks for the reply my branch of the Backway Family came from the Limehouse area of London. Daniel transported to Australia 1840's son of Daniel 1784-1822 & Elizabeth. Who was the son of John 1734-1804 who married Mary Blair 1768.
I need a connection to the Backway's of Devon in the 1650's.
Thanks Roger.
