1851 Census for Manchester shows the following
Thomas Sneyd 42 Steel Smelter born Ireland
Margaret Sneyd 32 at home born Ireland
Ann Sneyd 24 daughter born Ireland
George Sneyd 8 son born Newton Lancs.
Other children born Newton.
Patrick McCardle 64 Visitor Farmer born Ireland
We know from later censuses that none of the ages given are reliable but would presume from the above that Ann Sneyd would have been born to a first wife of Thomas (possibly called Ann?). The 1871 Census in Sheffield also gives both Thomas' and Margaret's birthplaces as Dublin.
Can anyone tell me if these names are more likely to be Catholic or Protestant origin and how would I go about researching parish registers in Dublin.

Hiya Cynda,
I looked in Griffith's Valuation of Ireland. The Sneyds in Dublin were there between 1848-51 when
the Valuation was conducted in the city. I'm sorry I did not check for the exact dates of the other
four but they were in Ireland between 1848-61.
Margaret Sneyd, Blessington Street, St. Marys, Dublin
William Sneyd, Esq., Little Forrest, Swords, Dublin
Thomas Sneyd, Monkstown Road, Monkstown, Dublin
James Sneyd, Bellsgrove, Ballymachugh, Cavan
Charles Sneyd, Curran, Clonfeacle, Tyrone
Denis Sneyd, Bellsgrove, Ballymachugh, Cavan
Anne Sneyd, Bellsgrove, Ballymachugh, Cavan
I've not come across the surname Sneyd before so have no idea about the faith of this family.
Patrick McCardle might possibly be a member of the Catholic faith.
Two Sneyds appear in the 1850 Dublin Directory of 1850:
Henry W., 48-49 Sir John Rogerson's Quay (timber merchant)
Miss Margaret, 26 Blessington St (occup not listed)
Henry W puzzles me as he is not mentioned in the Valuation. I would thought his business qualified
as a property and would also have expected him to be a householder.
All the Best, Chris

Thanks for your information.
Margaret Sneyde was Margaret McCardle before she married Thomas. Their son George (8 in the 1851 Census) was shown as having been born in Newton Manchester so this would mean they were in Manchester by about 1843. It is possible that the Sneyds you list were relations. Does this valuation cover all people living in Dublin at that time or just those of more substantial means?
I would have thought Patrick McCardle, as a farmer, might have been listed. I wonder if he was Margaret's father.
Have rather strayed from this line but will have to get back and look into them a bit closer again when I get the chance.
Thanks again

Hiya Cynda,
The Valuation included every property owner.
