Hello All
Was there a hospital in Burntwood in 1943?
I've learnt this morning that this is where granddad died age 42. He lived and was buried in Birmingham.
The most excellent staff at Witton Cemetery in Birmingham tell me that place of death is recorded as "emergency hospital, Burntwood". Granddad was a canal boatman.
Any ideas anyone?

Hello Jamys
There was a St Matthews hospital, Burntwood, until recently. When it
closed it was a psychiatric hospital but may have been a general hospital
in its past. You will have to look into its history.
Hope this helps a little

Hi, its me again
I just Googled St Matthews Burntwood. If you do the same and
click on the top one it will tell you about it.
Do you know the cause of death? He may have been in the right
place, it being an asylum.
Hope you are not offended by this suggestion :-[

Hello IJL
The description "emergency hospital" leads me to think he was taken ill whilst away from home and taken to the nearest hospital. I've just sent for his death cert. which I hope will explain things a bit better.
Thanks for your time.

Burntwood became one of the Ministry of Health's Emergency Medical Service Hospitals that were set up in 1939 for expected civilian casualties in air raids. Asylums were among the institutions that were incorporated in the scheme.

In 1948 following the introduction of the National Health Service Burntwood Asylum became St Matthews Hospital. http://www.institutions.org.uk/asylums/england/sts/burntwood_asylum.htm

The Times Aug 1945 has a Death Notice - "On Aug 7, at Burntwood Emergency Hospital, ......."
Early 1946 there was a serious traincrash at Lichfield and the Times article Jan 2nd includes
"Fourteen injured were taken to Lichfield Hospital and others to neighbouring hospitals.
Four other hospitals, including Burntwood Emergency Hospital and the Public Assistance Hospital, Trent Valley Road, Lichfield, dealt with casualties.
The following were detained in Burntwood Emergency Hospital, Lichfield:- ....."
No mention of possible location

I was just wondering if the hospital could have been Hammerwich (Cottage ) Hospital which was on Hospital Road, Hammerwich. The address of Hammerwich is now Burntwood. The cottage hospital was knocked down some years ago and is now a housing estate. It was connected in some way to the Victoria hospital in Lichfield.
Hope you have some success in your quest!
