Title: Dublin Manns
Post by: platespinner on Thursday 12 October 06 15:21 BST (UK)
Hi from a newbie!

I would love to hear anything about my great Grandmother Ethel Mary Mann (1887-1921). She married and died in Dublin and her only surviving child was only 5 when Ethel passed away.
All I know about her is that she was a Milner when young, her father was John Mann and her husband Joseph Huston Stokes.
Any information pertaining to this lady would be very gratefully received.

Many thanks.

Hello platespinner,

A belated welcome to Rootschat.

I'm wondering why you say Ethel's only surviving child was born in 1916. That child could have been her only child.

I'd say she was probably born in Dublin. I've based that on the parishes where both the surnames of Mann and Stokes appear.... Armagh, Belfast city, Dublin, Dublin city, Limerick, Limerick city, Tipperary, Tyrone and Waterford

Hi Chris,

Many thanks for taking the time to reply to my post.

I know that Ethel and Joe had a little boy Matthew a couple of years before Sylvia was born but he didn't survive, indeed Sylvia didn't know of his existence. Joe was born in Longford- his father Matthew was in the Royal Engineers later moved to work in Phoenix Park. Joe was a surveyor as was Ethel's Father, John Mann. This is the only information I know about John but will keep looking!

Thanks again,

Angela
