Hi,
I'm trying to track down John Rossiter/Rossitter/Rosseter who married Sushan (Correct spelling!!) Mary Handley born Offchurch on June 2nd 1805.
They married at Stretton on Fosse, Gloucestershire on 28th February 1834.
In the 1851 Census, Sushan and her three children (Alfred H Rossiter born about 1836 , Charles James Rossiter born about 1838 and John Handley Rossiter born about 1843) were living at 19 Clarendon Street, Aston, Warwickshire but there is no sign of John.
The first two children were born in Butler, Ireland but that is proving impossible to find. John Handley Rossiter was born in Lancashire.
I'm hoping that some brave soul can piece all this information together and track John and his family down please.
Any help greatly appreciated.TIA.
best wishes

Hi, I'm trying to find your people but can't seem to get them on the 1851 for Birmingham. Can you tell me how the names are spelled on the 1851 and do you have a ref number.
Thanks,
India

Hi India,
I don't have the reference because I got the information from someone else with access to the 1851 Census. She did say that it was hard and that she found Sushan and her children at 19 Clarendon St. Aston living next door to a relative of theirs called Edward Handley. I think he may have been Sushan's father or grandfather.
She said the 1851 entry transcribing was poor and it had several dashes and then ----SSETER. However as I've had experience before names being spelt differently on different censuses I left the spelling open. It seems probable that it will be ROSSETER.
I don't know if she would be living in the same place because it is 10 years earlier but it's worth a try perhaps. The only other thing I can thing of is that they left fairly soon after they were married and went to live either in or near Butler, Ireland, where the first two children were born.
That's the best I can do I'm afraid. Hope this helps.

Hi RC,
I didn't want you to think that I was questioning your info....it's just that when I do a lookup on 1841, I try to get a printout of 1851 to use as a guide... otherwise I have scribble on bits of paper all over the place!!
In any case,
I've found your lot on the 1851 so I thought I would cut and paste it so you have the reference.

Now, in thinking about this, I recon that Susan Mary's husband, James, must have died and that she moved to Birmingham to be next door to her brother by the look of it.
I don't think I'm going to be able to find them in Birmingham on the 1841 because it looks as though they went from Ireland to Lancashire and were in Lancashire when John was born in about 1843.
Unless you have a hunch that they went from Ireland to Birmingham then up to Lancashire and back down to B'ham again!
Have you looked for a death for James Rossiter in Lancashire?
Boaz James Rossiter died June Q 1848 Wigan. Ref 21-600.
Have you found a birth certificate for John in Lancashire? That would give you a clue as to where they might be in 1841.
Sorry, that's about all I can give you right now.
I will put the Rossiters on my list of people to keep an eye on as I trawl through Birmingham though,
Hope this helps,
India, in California. :)

Hi India,
Thank you very much for the posting and the information.
Bet California is a lot warmer and dryer than it is here in the UK.
As for for James Rosseter I am only just starting out to track this guy down and have very little information to work from.
Although some of the children are listed as being born in Butler, Ireland I'm having enough difficulty finding the place!! I reckon it must be a really small village that doesn't appear on modern maps.
It's certainly a strange set of circumstances. They marry in Gloucestershire in 1834 but the first child is born in 1836 in Butler and two years later they are still there when the second known child is born. So they either stay there for a few more years and/or move back to England and settle in Lancashire. They have their third child in about 1843 but by the time of the 1851 Census Sushan and the three children are back in Birmingham close to relatives. Can't find him in the 1881 Census. Yes, it certainly fits with your theory that he has died.
Having said that I can't find Sushan and her family in the 1881 Census and wondered what has happened to them.
I have no birth certificates to work from so I'll follow your suggestion and check out the death of John Rosseter and check for his wife and children as well.
Maybe they all died relatively young.
Thanks for taking the time and trouble to dig this out for me. I'm sure it will prove very, very helpful.
best wishes
