Hi
I am currently using Family Tree Maker Version 6 by Broderbund, which I have had for many years. I have recently bought a new computer and am looking into buying some new software! I really like the version I have but wonder if there are any better packages out there. Do Broderbund to an updated version? Any help gratefully accepted.
Best wishes

Broderbund has gone out of business.
I use Legacy - the standard version is available for free, and it doesnt cost much to upgrade to the deluxe version. :)
Just make sure you have plenty of RAM (I think 512 should be ok) as version 6 (the current version) does use a LOT of memory.

Hi Nicky,
I use Family Historian by Calico Pie. There is a users group (Run separately ,not the Publishers) It is a British Programme and you can still buy the earlier version.
Have a look at the users group site

I have used Family Historian since it was released a few years ago. I'm now on version 3. I would definitely recommend it to anyone. It was specifically designed for British genealogy and has coped with my weird tree - including duplicate ancestors !

This has been discussed a number of times on Rootschat and there are almost as many opinions as there are Rootschat members. Have a look at

for some of the opinions.

FTM is now owned by myfamily.com, who also own many other genealogy companies like ancestry.com.
If you like FTM 6.0 then why bother to upgrade? If it still works then continue to use it. The number of new features will probably not justify the outlay.

I agree with downside - I upgraded FTM from V5 to V11 & found very little different - I did get a couple of extra export options but very little else. My money would have been better spent on more certificates or subscriptions ;D

Family Historian is in my opinion the only one to buy (get the new version 3): superb diagrams, nice design and produced by small British developer rather than a massive American corporation.
