Please can you help find John Kettlewell b c1870? (of Whixley, Yorkshire) and his family:
Please can someone have a look through the 1841 - 1901 censuses for Kettlewell & is it possible to find Sarah\Mary's real identity and her family?
It's probably impossible!
John’s mother was adopted as a baby by a Mrs Kendall of Kirk Hammerton, Yorkshire:
Mother’s name was either Sarah or Mary
Sarah \ Mary - Surname unknown.
married
Richard Kettlewell - of Whixley
Their children:-
Mark m. possibly married a Laura?
Enoch m. Agnes ? lived at Scotland Mill, Adel, Leeds, Yorkshire
Arthur m. Annie ?
John m. Isobel Simpson
Laura m. Joe Burns - one daughter Betty
There is a sister in-law that fits in somewhere in Saskatewan, Canada – Laura? maybe?
Can their Canadian family be found too?
Only other clues
John & Sarah\Mary Kettlewell in 1912 approx’ lived at Bywater Farm, Adel, Leeds
they were Farmers \ Horse Breeders
John Kettlewell had his best horses taken from him for use in the Great War, this ruined John and he died not long after and his wife Sarah\Mary went to the work house.. (Golly it was tough in those days.)
Many thanks,
Jed

Hi Jed
You've got lots of requests here making it a bit confusing ??? :D
First off have you found John in 1881? This available to search free at
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/default.asp
I can only see one Whixley John born c1874 parents John and Ann There is a John born 1870 in Howden with mother Mary.
Where did you get his mother's name from? And father's name? How do you know his mother was adopted? Have you found her on censuses?

Hello Wendy & Jan, firstly - sorry Jan if the posting is confusing.
I tried to arrange 'all known facts' and hope that there's a clue or two in there somewhere.
Wendy, thanks lots. You have them now and it's possible that Richard Kettlewell's middle name could be JOHN. (I've just been told - after relaying your finds).
So, I'd hoped the children's names would be the clue to their parents and I believe Whixley village is the home of my Kettlewell's, which was my only other clue.
The Kettlewell's & children must head for Scotland Mill, Adel, Leeds in the late 1800's and I think their house attached to the Mill, it was hit by lightening, and the Mill burnt down soon after, but not sure if the lightening was the cause of it! That was 1901'ish
Thank you very much Wendy for your help and 'yes please' to anything & everything in relation to finding out about the Kettlewell family and their children and family.
I really would like to see - all the available information, especially if there could be some clues to Mary's adoption as a baby and her mother Mrs Kendall of Kirk Hammerton - what do you think?
Many thanks & kind regards,
Jed

In 1861 she is a servant in Kirk Hamerton - again happy to post details if you need them.
I'm intrigued as to how you know she was adopted - there are 2 birth registrations for Mary Ann Kendalls in 1847 in Knaresborough district which is the one for Whixley.

Hi Jed
Thanks for the PM.
Re Mary Ann's adoption it may as you say be a family myth - but I suppose it could also be true eg Charles is 42 so may have older children from a previous marriage and Mary Ann could be child of an unmarried daughter. Also possible they took in someone else's illegitmate child or one of a mother who died in childbirth and registered her as their own ??? :-\
Anyway

Edith Smith (Kettlewell) was my grandmother. My daughter has a photo of Richard Kettlewell and Mary Ann Kendall holding my grandmother as a baby. We may have more info on the family which I have not yet seen. I also remember my great uncle Asa who was living with my mother and father at the time of his death. How could we be of help?
