I have an ancestor, John Calladine, (found by a relative in England) in the registers born in the quarter ended December 1849. Ref. Volume 17, Page 27. It says birthplace: Burton-Upon-Trent, Derbyshire. When I put this into google, it comes up as Staffordshire. Which one is it please?

I use genuki to check such things -
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/STS/BurtonuponTrent/index.html
It specifies Staffordshire for the Parish and has no mention of a change, however I also found this when checking civil registrations on Genuki
http://www.fhsc.org.uk/genuki/REG/sts.htm#burt
(The Registration District)
Burton upon Trent
Created 1st July 1837. Mainly in Staffordshire, but included parts of Derbyshire.
Sub-districts : Burton upon Trent; Gresley; Repton; Tutbury.
GRO volumes : XVII (1837-51); 6b (1852-1930).
Anslow, Barton under Needwood, Branstone, Burton Extra, Burton upon Trent, Dunstall, Hanbury, Horninglow, Outwoods, Rolleston, Scropton, Stapenhill, Stretton, Tatenhill, Tutbury, Winshill, Wychnor.
Registers now divided between East Staffordshire and Derby districts.
So presumably your birth was in a sub-district or Parish located in Derbyshire.

Hi,
Just to back up what Trish said (sorry it's ages later, but I have only just joined RC!)
Burton itself is definitely in Staffs. However, the River Trent, which Burton is 'on', forms the Staffs-Derbys county boundary, so some towns and villages that are very close to Burton are in Derbyshire, e.g. Swadlincote and Repton.
There is some info which might be useful to you on the Wikipedia page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burton_upon_Trent
Look especially under the 'Local Government' section on this page for an explanation of the current and historic local organisation.
If you are interested in the history of Burton, this page looks interesting http://www.burton2000.co.uk/History/index.htm
I hope this info is useful.

Hi, also Scropton is in Derbyshire but just over the side of another boundary, the River Dove.

Wow - that was awhile ago.
Many thanks for the added explanations (I'm not sure if Shash is still around)
I live in Australia, but have an interest in Staffordshire as my husbands roots are there. My knowledge, consequently is all secondhand! It is really interesting and useful to hear from someone who understands the geography & the reasons for the information given in Genuki.

you may be interested to know that www.mycensuses.com list digital copies of the 1851 Census by County for sale on CD.
I have purchased several Counties and can vouch for the service and value.
If one is interested in the full view of a County as opposed to individual person searches then they are excellent.
They contain full copies of each entry page.
