My mysterious vanishing Cardon family........
Thomas Cardon married his wife Martha and at some point lived in (Pike) Illinois USA, they had a son John G/C Cardon dob and pob unknown ( have seen transcribed both ways) and a daughter Elizabeth Kate (Kate) Cardon born 1861 circa Illinois, USA.
I have posted on other boards chasing up some research ideas that I had, with some results (unconfirmed) if anyones interested. See here-

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,187216.0.html
The family immigrated to NZ on the Ship Matoaka, which departed London, ENG and arrived NZ 03/01/1865, as part of the Waikato immigration scheme. ( Elizabeth Kate's future husband and inlaws were also on board George Thomas Holmes they married NZ, 6 August 1879 at the Holy Trinity Church Waiuku) I have held to now in not buying Elizabeth Kate Cardon and George Thomas Holmes marriage cert ( money is tight this time of year) but perhaps someone can check and see if theres a intent to marry notice please.
Both families settled around the Waiuku area. Thomas Cardon shows on the NZ 1881 Elec Roll as a carpenter living in Toro Point , Waiuku. & 1893 Elec roll he appears as an Engineer at Tuakau, Franklin district, his wife Martha was not on the 1893 roll.
Another son was born John Frederick Cardon (Frederick) who was a miner in Waihi, his burial record states he was born in Waiuku 1866 c. He died Waihi 1914, no known wife or children,( his probate details available above message)he also shows in the 1893 Elec Roll. His death Notice states the following ( so I know that there was definatley a first son- not born in NZ)
Herald, 2nd September 1914.
On August 26th, at Waihi Hospital, John Frederick Cardon, 2nd son of the late Thomas and Martha Cardon of Waiuku, in his 48th year.
I have been contacted by a person who believes his ancestor was a sister to Elizabeth Kate, but I have yet to proove this, so there may also be 2 other daughters Henrietta Edith Lenton Cardon & Elina/Elma Pauline Lenton Cardon. ( I have some details for these two) Henrietta married in Gisborne, NZ so if she is related, perhaps the family went there ? There is also a Henry Madison Cardon that keeps popping up in my searches, I am trying to find out if he is connected or not.
Now Thomas, Martha and son num1 seem to have vanished into thin air, there are no probates for them, and I cant locate any burials. I tried mailing the Franklin council for a cemetery search, nothing came up, even with a alternate spelling of Carden. Where did they go and what happened to son num 1, surely he must have died young or left NZ at a young age, I have had no luck with passenger lists right across the board( apart from the ship Matoaka)
Elizabeth Kate Holmes nee Cardon lived her life and died and was buried in Waiuku. Her husband died 1896 she never remarried, Some time after this she purchased a home in Pacific Street, Waiuku. From Walter Smith in which she operated a maternity home. ( George & Kate Holmes had 8 children, and this Holmes line is well documented)
If anyone can offer a fresh perspective or help me out, I would greatly appreciate your imput.
Cheers

Hi Del
Just working on exact spelling for the time being, here are a few bits and pieces that may be of some use.
John Frederick CARDON b 14 May 1866, Waiuku
Possible siblings…..
1879 Waiuku School Records showing Parent/Guardian as Thomas CARDON:
Annie, dob 26 Jul 1870
Henry, dob 9 Sep 1871
May
(it is POSSIBLE that there might have been another Thomas CARDON with children)
Waikumete Burials:
Henry Madinson CARDON, 74, 1945
Barry Henry Madinson CARDON, 72, 2005
There is also a Divorce record for Henry Madinson @ Archives Auck which should have a copy of the original marriage cert, which in turn will give you the parent’s names, to be able to rule him in or out....….
So father Thomas was dead by 2nd September 1914, but mother Martha presumably still alive….
The only CARDON marriages that show are:
Elina Pauline Lenton – 1923 - McCRYSTAL
Elizabeth Kate – 1879 - HOLMES
Henrietta Edith Lenton – 1915 - WRIGHT
Henry Madinson – 1928 - SHEAHAN
Marsden Reid – 1939 - COLLINGS
Mona Kennedy – 1918 - MacKINNON
Mona Kennedy – 1953 - LYON
(NB the 1st marriage for Henry Madinson must have been in another country BEFORE 1928 as the divorce papers are in the date range 1925-1926)

Hi Del
Quite a few random hits for CARDON 1865-1920 which might help to build up a picture of who was around at that time....

It would be worth you doing a lookup in 1896 Electoral roll to see if Martha is still alive and on that one..apparently a lot of women missed out on the the first roll in 1893. JUst to try and find out when they stopped appearing on the rolls.
I was loking at your past postings to see the probate for the son that died in Waihi, but couldn't find right thread, did the parents get mentioed, ?still alive, who purchased his grave site? Just to try and narrow down timeframe of whe they died..

Births rego,
1866 John Fred CARDON Drury [139]
1869 Annie Jane CARDON Auckland [191]
1871 Henry CARDEN Drury [268]
1873 Bertha May CARDON Awhitu [1462]
Deaths
Martha CARDON 1879 Awhitu [49]
Electoral roll:
Thomas is on 1900 roll for Franklin, but not, 1902, 1905, 1908
***
Checked deaths from 1870-1914, no sign of Thomas or any other Cardon or Carden
apart from Martha and Frederick .
****
When Martha died the kids were quite young 6-13, must have been tough or maybe John looked after them.
Searched Awhitu and Waiuku cemeteries, no sign, did a fairly intense search of all the names at Waiuku looking for possible mistakes, but no one popped out.
-
and now we have,
Bertha May CARDEN m William John PELLOW 1893
Annie Jane CARDEN m James SMITH 1910
Seems that maybe Carden is the original spelling or its swapped regularly.
Can ONLY find Thomas CARDENs on the freebmd for 1837-1840 births.
I like the look of the PELLOW, gotta be an easy one to follow up.
-
and this could be the daughter of the above marriage OR the widow re-marrying….
1915 Folio Ref: 07110
Bertha May PELLOW
John Dixon BIRKETT
-
1919 Electoral Roll, Wellington East
John BIRKETT
Bertha May BIRKETT
John Dixon BIRKETT:
http://www.wellington.govt.nz/services/cemeteries/search/details.php?id=4141&Service=Cremation
given the age and therefore probable dob, he is of a similar age to Bertha May CARDEN…..

It appears from paperspast that a T Cardon from Waiuku was in the army or local militia, if this is your guy maybe he went to the Sth Africa War ?
I think maybe its time to buy a few certs, definitely Marthas (for her parents and possibly where she is buried) and Berthas marriage certificate to confirm parentage.
Those school records that Bren found are good, but need some certs to make sure.
and the paperspast (Sthn Cross) have a number of Cardon hits all Waiuku. Pity it ends before Marthas death.
and just another thought, one of the paperspast items was a farming contest, and a J CARDON won the drainage test.
-
they had a son John G/C Cardon dob and pob unknown ( have seen transcribed both ways)
Another son was born John Frederick Cardon (Frederick) who was a miner in Waihi, his burial record states he was born in Waiuku 1866 c. Now Thomas, Martha and son num1 seem to have vanished into thin air, there are no probates for them, and I cant locate any burials.
as both these boys "appear" to have been named John, it is more than likely that the first son "John" died as a child - perhaps before they came to NZ
-quite usual in Scottish families where there might be 3 or even 4 attempts to get a living child to carry on the name....
-
Thankyou so much you are all brilliant ;D

They can't be Thomas and Marthas kids, if they are related they must be Johns or Henrys and Henry ain't for sure yet.
I would get Marthas death cert and verify the number of kids, as well as getting her parents. :)
-
Hi all,
In the past week I have met a family member of mine, and can confirm the following.
Children of Martha & Thomas
John G, born ?
Elizabeth Kate, born usa
John Frederick, born nz
Annie Jane, born nz
Henry Madinson, born nz
Bertha May, born nz
Henrietta Edith Lenton, born nz
Now the plot thickens
On the deth reg entry it gives Marthas cause of death 10 Jan 1879 as Exhaustion From Child Birth 1 day,
I query on whether this child lived or died there is no record? perhaps Elina/Elma Pauline lenton Cardon was the last child and I have my dates out, as I thought she was a grandchild too? I have lso found a child of Annie's before she married.
Any ideas ?
Cheers

So you have Marthas death certificate ?
Where is she buried ?
Have you been to library or do I need to check for Henrietta and Pauline ?
Are we still looking for Thomas ?
:)
-
Hi Del
NZ Birth:
1877: CARDEN, Henrietta Edith Lenton, 129, Mar ¼, Awhitu
No birth registered in 1879 for a CARDEN/CARDON
No sign of a death for Thomas up to 1950.
So, did he leave the country…..??
Waikumete Burials:
Henry Madinson CARDON, 74, 1945
The reference for this death is 1271, Jun ¼, Avondale
Bren.
-
Hi,
I havent got Marths death cert yet, but have a copy of entry from register, from Waiuku Museum, the informant was husband Thomas.
-
Whoops... didnt finish and ended up posting. Still looking for Thomas and first son John, Son num2 - John's probate didnt offer much information. Have had Franklin Council search their cemeteries and no luck for any Cardon or Carden.
-
I would simply purchase the printout of the death certificate, will give parents names AND where buried.
Having a slight difficulty with Thomas being a carpenter then becoming an engineer, the fields are so different.
Have you checked the Sthn Cross paper references ?
The John CARDON who won the draining contest, may well be the first boy and thats why John Frederick C was always called FRED ???
Getting the cert sounds the easiest way of solving this, 9/10 that Thomas will be buried with her, where ever she is !

any other action happening ?
Are you going to get your grt grt grandmothers death cert ?
I see you have been in touch with one of Annies grandchildren, :)
Might have a lead on Thomas but I'll wait till some confirmations come thru.
-
Hi everyone,
Yes going to purchase cert, have been a bit slack due on the genealogy front due to being very busy at work. I work at the Howick Historical Village and have spent 6 weeks doing conservation work on a 100+ aged cottage, in preperation for a live day and family reunion. Will let you all know how it goes, good stuff on the possible "Thomas" lead Mk2.
Del ;D

Ok,

Re-hashing this topic....
I have the death printout for Martha, death 1879 Waiuku, but no burial information on it....grrrr. I have had the Franklin Cemeteries searched aprox 6 times over the last 5 years, for many a name variation, but still no luck.
Most of the family that died around the same are buried very close to one another in Waiuku Cemetery, but no Martha or Thomas either.
I have even done a walk around of several local cemeteries in Waiuku and still no luck.
I thought perhaps she may have been buried with her first son ( who I also cant find) What has happened to her/them, surely in 1879 they wouldnt have travelled to far away with a deceased body anyway?
Death printout gives cause of death as exhaustion from childbirth 1 day, but there are no birth or death entries for any child this year, so likely she was still pregnant at time of death?
Please help me , I would really like to find where she was interred and acknowledge her.
-
Hi There Delboy,
Can't see Martha or Thomas on the burial locator cd from NZSG
I do hope you find their resting place soon
Regards

Ok everyone......brace yourselves, I have certs....and.....Nothing Nada. Thomas's says buried Waiuku !!! At first I though it said Hamilton but if you compare the letters to the other writing, the K in Auckland etc, you will see as I did it says Waiuku, bugger. WHERE ARE THEY.... I have been back in touch with the council and NO luck.
-
I have checked with Franklin Cemeteries, the NZGS burial locator, NZGS disc v5, and every Cenetery I can think of. Even found a Thomas Gordon buried mauku, but there was not enough info back from the Cemetery to confim or rule out. :'(
-
Hi Delboy,
I hope you dont mind - I've enhanced your photo a little to try and help.
Good Luck

Just a thought but Little's funeral records for that time are held at Auckland City Library in the Research Room. That may have the details about Thomas' burial as I do not see it on the certificate/printout

Hi DelBoy
Just harking back to Mk_2's reply # 27 - and the death notice from the "NZ Herald" :
In addition to "advice" of the death, there was usually (in the same edition), publication of the funeral notice ... detailing time of the service, where the procession was to leave from ... and most importantly, where (which cemetery) it was headed for.
So certainly worth searching for this.
[Having said that, funeral notices are not always easily spotted in these old newspapers ... they're not always necessarily where you think they should be. ;) Usually though, they're found towards the back of the paper, in amongst the columns of general advertisments.]

Hi Lu,
Found info on the rev' but this dosent help, just places them back in the Waiuku district, same time.

I have a photograph of Kate Cardon (Holmes) if you are interested.

Hello, I have been researching the Kariaotahi School (Waiuku) history and came across May Cardon, age 10, on the roll in 1884. Many Matoaka passengers settled in this area - including Kariaotahi. There is no other record of any Cardons - including May - before or after that year (so far, I have researched between 1880 and 1887 only).

Hi Del,
My name is Danika Cardon-Smith, daughter of Dion Cardon-Smith, son of Frances Smith and Carol Cardon, who was the daughter of Henry Madinson Cardon, who was the son of Thomas Cardon and Martha Reid, nice to meet you haha!
