Title: Henry Graham MONTAGU
Post by: helenna on Sunday 08 October 06 14:07 BST (UK)
Am looking for the birth details of the above named. He would have been born approx 1801. The 1841 census H0107/724/10/20/39 puts his birth place as Middx.
Sorry dont have any other info so will understand if you cant help.

Regards
Helenna

Interestingly theres only 1 name in the +/- 5 year period in Middx ..

Born 08 SEPT 1801

Christened  04 OCT 1801 in  Monken Hadley, London

Parents names are: -
   THOMAS MONTAGUE   and   ELIZABETH

Monken Hadley is near Barnet - Herts today ... this is only a possibilty based on christian name, DoB and Middlesex ..

Hi,
Thankyou so much for info re above. So impressed with such a fast reply.
Could  I bother you further and ask if you can tell me if he had a brother named Charles, or where I could obtain this info?

Regards

Hello

Sorry to stick my oar in, if I'm following the correct family, it seems on the 1851 census that he says he is born in Marylebone, Middlesex.

Seems odd that he went from a Butler in 1841 to a Professor if my eyes don't deceive me in 1851.

p.s. the www.familysearch.org baptisms are not complete.

Biker

Hi,
No your eyes are not deceiving you. It would appear he was quite a rogue and got transported to Australia  for obtaining money by false pretences in 1852 for 7 yrs. Quite a character. However I am researching my grandfather of the same name and just - just- hoping that this interesting fellow had a brother named Charles who could be my Henry's father???????????
Thanks for help

Helenna

This is the scope of the Registers transcribed by the LDS / IGI for the parish.

Monken Hadley
Baptisms   1732-1876
Marriages  1755-1885

There are no other births nor a marriage for the possible parents.

Would be worth checking against original registers for completeness and accuracy ...

Dear All

There are quite a few threads already on this chap, I think?

Perhaps you should link to them so that folk don't go over the same ground again, Helenna!

???I am looking for Henry Graham Montagu/e.Children were;Henry G (b) abt1855. Eugene Graham (b) 1858(my grandfather),he married in 1888 and arrived in Queensland the same year.Emma Maria married in 1880 to James Clinton Bishop. Grace Matilda (b)1860.(d)1861.
I cant find Henry Graham anywhere, he was on Eugene's marriage cert: as a public writer. Eugene's mother was Emma Dellar. No marriage found. I found a H G in the debtors prison in 1846 then he was tried again & transported for 7yrs???.

Hi GYpsy,

Many thanks for your letter, but, sadly this isnt the Henry Graham Montagu I am searching for. He certainly didnt have the people you mention in his family.
Best of Luck

After a lot of searching I have found that Henry Graham Montague was not transported after all. I have the papers from NA saying that he was transfered to Dartmoor in 1853 & by 1855 he was released & returned to London.

Hi Tiger67

Many thanks for your reply and interest, it was a surprise to get a reply after all this time.  However, this isnt the person I am looking for. My Henry was born 1839  and then went into the army when he was 17. Serving in the Crimean War and then the Indian Uprising and returning to Bath England. I have his obituary from the Bath Chronicle which gives details of hs life from the age of 17.
However, as we dont know anything of his life before 17,  do you think that the info you have just given me could be him????????????? He would have had to be 14 in 1853???????
Oh! this is a puzzle.  Also after much searching from many of us we have all come to the conclusion that he must have been illegitimate.
Once again many thanks
Helenna
