Title: Birkenhead workhouse pls
Post by: kazzam on Saturday 07 October 06 14:28 BST (UK)
hi
I am looking for any records of my grandfather
I know he was born in the birkenhead workhouse in 1879
but dont know anything else about his mother or father if there was one
I do know he was sent to Grimsby at the age of 14 to be an apprentice fisherman from the workhouse
His name was ROBERT BULEY he went on to be a fisherman and died in 1945
on the boat/ship Aquarius during the war
anything from the workhouse years would be grateful
Karen

Hi Karen
the first place to try is the birkenhead archive at the town Hall. They are only open on Thursday Friday and half day Saturday.So be patient when waiting for a reply.Just ask the simple question of do they hold the record of? for the Year? and the name of the person born there.It will save time both ways

Good luck Celia

Have you got his birth certificate,He was born in Birkenhead so he would be registered at the G.R.O of B.M.D in the same building as the Archives. But not inside the town Hall it is at the side of the building.( i call it the celler ;D)His birth cert should give his mothers name.

Celia
sorry dont know what happened there my first post didnt go so i had to wright  it again ???

I Karen
i have spent a good deal of time trying to find the registration of birth for your William(because i wanted to ;D)
The G.R.O on line are very slow to download.Due to the fact that two pages get downloaded at the same time.So I did it other ways. There are loads of Buley Births for <1879> But   most Of the Buley are from London and surrounding areas.I cant find Robert Registered in birkenhead. Nor can i find him on the 1881 census. I don't have access to the 1891 but there is a reference to an entry for Robert Buley born about 1879 Residing in the city. Do you have this census?

You have a big Gap to fill havent you ;D If you go to the top of the page.You will see Cheshire, Lookup request, all census requests go on that board. On the Subject line of your new topic put
1891 lookup please, Buley, Birkenhead
then say who you are looking for.It might  not be him of course but you never know.

http://www.ancestry.co.uk/search/rectype/vital/freebmd/bmd.aspx
There isn't any order forms, Ancestry has various ways of searching. You have to look at menu to see which one suits you.

The address at the top is just to get you there

hi, don't know if this uis any use

there is a Robert Morris in the Tranmere workhouse on the 1881 census who was born in 1879.

Is it possible this is him?  couls his surname nhave been mistranscribed?

( someone on here found one of my ancestors who's surname was really tompkins but was actually wrong on the census as Johnson - Ifound it was difinately them by further searching)

Or maybe he has his surname changed?

I think he was born in Kendal

From Freebmd

Births Sep 1879
~~~~~~~~
Bewley  Robert     Kendal  10b 714
As I think in 1881 he is with mother & father in Lancashire she Mary
Ann nee BEETHAM born 1858 Kendal
John BEWLEY 1858 Penrith, Cumberland,
Mary Ann dieds in 1890 Borkenhead which would account for him going
into the orphanage or work house
Mary Ann BEETHAM married John Graham BEWLEY in Kendal Dec Quater 1878
so it all fits
Have you got his marriage cert from 1912 yet ?
