It could be the name of a ship. I have a convict ancestor who was transported to Australia on a ship of that name.
Much more fun to think of a slightly more exotic reason for it though!! I'm going to take a guess and say they were experimenting with some form of alcohol :)

Perhaps it could be the mother's or a grandmother's maiden name?
