I'm stuck. I got the birth and marriage certificate for Herbert Thompson born in 1905 Brightside Sheffield and got his parents names Mabel Chisholme Storer and Henry Jamieson Thompson. Mabel is from Bedfordshire and I found her birth and that she was in Brightside in 1901. I found marriage details in Derby in 1902 but I can't find Henry anywhere except there and in the 2 certificates I have. Where has he come from? Mabel was born in 1875 so I would suppose Henry would be born about that time but every site I look for him comes up blank. In 1905 he was a stoker on the railway in Sheffield. Anybody help me?
-
Do you have the marriage certificate? Address/Occupation/Age/Father/Father'soccupation from that?
You might want to look for his birth in the Scottish records as well.
-
I've already tried Scottish records, no joy. It looks like I will have to get the Derby Marriage certificate for Henry and Mable because the only Henry J I can think might be possible is one who was born in Wath on Dearne who is a railway porter but I can't find out for sure till I go to the GRO index and see if it comes up.

Henry Jamieson Thompson was actually born in Scotland in 1878 when his mother was visiting there but the family lived in Warton near Lancaster. He was a farm servant at the age of fourteen but by 1901 had moved to Sheffield and was a stoker on the railway. I am currently trying to find a death record as I know he died in 1920 or 21. One record I sent for Vol 9C Pg.440 Line 132 is not him. What is your interest?

His birth was registered at Lancaster and his baptism was at Warton so do not understand where you get Scottish Birth from.
His father Stephen Thompson was a Quarryman and died before Harry was born. It is a mystery to me as to why he claimed Scottish Birth & certainly his grand-daughter believed he was Scottish. All I can think of is that as his father died before he was born he somehow decided he was Scottish. There are a number of strange entries in the Thompson family such as his mother claiming her Uncle as father in marriage certificate. Her father's surname is listed in earlier Scottish census records and I can only assume she was covering up her illegitimate birth. I have had Harry's birth in Warton confirmed by other close Thompson relatives since my initial enquiry.
I too haven't found his death certificate. Unfortunately my original sources of information including my mother in law have since died. There are still relatives in and around Lancaster but we have lost links with them for some time now.

I can see the baptism at Warton in 1877

I knew he had been sacked from the railway for theft but not exact circumstances.

Have you found his widow in 1939 ???
-
Which is his birth registration Duckweed :-\
-
Can't find his birth registration details.
Did have it but computer hard drive crashed & lost some data when I retrieved it. Heather Thompson said she remembered travelling by tram to see her. She had gone blind by then she said. She said she was a fearsome old lady. Heather wasn't born till 1948. Unless she was mistaken as she was very young she said. I have 1953 for Mabels death.
I think Wortley could be right for Harry.
-
Maybe Mabel died 1958, does this tie in with her age.
Deaths Mar 1958
Mabel C Thompson age 82
Wortley 2d 873
I must confess that I would not take a baptism as proof of place of birth but the 1881 does not say Scotland when his parents have given the information to the enumerator. Unless there is a Scottish birth certificate I would stick with Lancashire. ;D

Yes 1958 looks right. Don't know where I got 53 from. That's another confusion then as I took posthumous to mean father had died. Possibly because I hadn't found Stephen in census. I shall have to go and check everything. I have some notes from elderly relative about the children and grandchildren who stayed in Lancaster. I know Mary married again in 1884. Other mystery is where Mary was before her marriage to Stephen as can't find her in census records either England or Scotland.

Mary Jamieson (Jammieson) is listed in the 1851 census in Wigtown library. She was born at Marchfarm, Kirkinner, Wigtownshire (now Dumfries and Galloway) in 1850, daughter of William Jamieson. William is 56 and born in Ireland. In 11841 census Mary wife is also listed as being born in Ireland though by 1851 this has changed to Kirkinner. In the 1841 census there is aWilliam, 15 listed as being born in Ireland - could he be a son from an earlier marriage?
-
In 1876, the year before Henry was born, Mary and Stephen had a son , William, who only lived six days. It is possible that she went to family for Henry's birth because of this, possibly to her sister Margaret.
-
Mabel Chisholm Thompson died in March 1956. The Wortley record is the correct one as they were then living in Deepcar.
-
Mary's parents, William Jamieson and Mary (nee Smith) are buried in the churchyard at Kirkinner. The headstone was paid for by daughter Margaret ( married name Kirk)
-
I am trying to trace Mary Ann Thompson, born to Stephen and Mary 15th June1880 in Warton. She seems to disappear after leaving her son James with her mother Mary in 1901. Family oral history has her going to Canada but I can find no marriage date or travel details. She is buried with Stephen and Mary in Warton churchyard.
-
I did try Scottish records and didn't find any trace. Harry says New Galloway in census etc. I have Mary in early Scottish census as different surname to mother who was down as Mary Jamieson. She had 3 children with different surnames which it said she was mother of. William Jamieson is in different census then Mary goes to be housekeeper. So I am yet again confused as the Mary mother of Mary I traced through census records never married. Unless there are 2 Marys.
This is conversation I had elsewhere. http://www.forum.familyhistory.uk.com/archive/index.php/t-11962.html
