Hello,
I am trying to find out any info on Sarah Mitchell. She was born October 30, 1869 in Leitrim. Her parents were John Mitchell and Sarah O'Roarke. All I have to work with is this info. Any suggestions on how I could gather more information would be greatly appreciated. Live in the US so I don't have the ability to check too many records.
Thanks!!!

Hi McGillyclan, I looked at the IGI and found brothers and a sister for your Sarah, the dates are
Catherine Mitchell born on the 21st of Feburary 1867 in ManorHamilton county Leitrim
Patrick Mitchell 5th Feburary 1868 Leitrim
And Sarah as you know born on the 30th of October 1869 in Leitrim then
James Mitchell 29th of Jan 1871 Leitrim he must have died as there was another
James Mitchell 27th November 1872 Leitrim
and then George Mitchell 25th of September 1875 Leitrim
and the mothers surname is listed as Rorke.
all the best
colette.

Wow!!! Thank you so much. I am so excited to learn of this new info. I have been at the computer all morning and all I came up with was the birthdate for Sarah. This is great! Do you have any suggestions on where I could look to find out where they may have lived in Leitrim??
Thanks again!!!

Hi again Mcgillyclan I was thinking about the Griffith valuation. so i typed in the surname Mitchell and the county Leitrim
and found a John Mitchell in the Town of Manorhamilton, Castle Street. in the Parish of Killasnet in county Leitrim
and another John Mitchell in the Town of Manorhamilton, Main Street. In the Parish of Cloonclare in County Leitrim.
It was just that Manorhamilton is mentioned on the birth record of Catherine Mitchell.
Now as you know they say that the first female child is named after the mothers Mother well i found
Catherine Rourke in the Town of Manorhamilton Castle Street in the Parish of Killasnet county Leitrim
I wonder if this Catherine is the mother of Sarah?
You could look for the marriage of John and Sarah about 1865-66 in Manorhamilton Leitrim.
Colette
Ps do you notice that Catherine Rourke lived in Castle street and so did John Mitchell.?

You have really gotten things rolling for me....I will definately check into the marriage record. It has been such a struggle to find any info on these relatives and now I feel like I really have something to work with.
I am so thankful!!

Its me again i noticed i had made a mistake in the birth date of Catherine i put 1869 :-[ but the Year was 1867 thats why i was saying to check for a marriage for Sarah and John in 1865-66.
Glad to have been of some help to you and good luck.
Colette
Ps let me know how you get on. ;D

I think I found their marriage record. I found a John Mitchell and a S Rourke who were married in Leitrim in 1866. I bet this is them. Do you know any good sites where I could possible locate the marriage certificate???

My great grandmother was called Mary Mitchell born around 1862 somewhere in Co. Leitrim.
Her father was James Mitchell who by 1881 was described on Mary's marriage cert. as "shoeing smith deceased". I do wonder if the "deceased" bit might be a lie to enable her to marry without his permission! (she married in Weymouth England at the age of 19)
The only clue I have as to where in Co.Leitrim the family came from is the 1881 english census where the place name is illegible but looks as if it ends in "...ile" Any ideas as to how I might narrow down the search?
I know the dates don't match for your James Mitchell but names tend to stay in families and Leitrim is not that big a place!

This website allows you to search for townlands, etc. in Ireland:
www.thecore.com/seanruad
You can put in part of a word and find matches. However, I tried looking for a townland ending in 'ile' in Co. Leitrim but nothing shows up.

Thanks - I tried several variations with the same result as you!
Mary Mitchell was a 19 year old Irish girl working as a maid in an English Hotel and explaining where she came from in an Irish accent to an enumerator probably with a Dorset accent!
I am hoping at some time to get to see the original census return - maybe it will be clearer than the microfilm.
But thanks again for your help.

I have Mary Mitchell married Patrick McFee DROMAHAIR Co Leitrim. The children I have are Mary McFee 1873, Patrick 1875, Catherine 1876 and Beesey 1879. So Mary could have been born around 1850 or so. I am trying to connect to other Mitchells from Leitrim. Any help much appreciated.

My Mary Mitchell was born in 1861 in Mohill, Co Leitrim and married an Englishman on 26th Oct 1881 in Weymouth England and died in Camberwell South London in 1921. I am pretty certain she never visited Ireland after leaving. The only other thing I know about her is that her father was James Mitchell a "shoeing blacksmith".
Given the small population of Co Leitrim there is probably a connection between our Mitchells but its not obvious so far! Actually looking on the map, Dromahair and Mohill are at opposite ends of the county but even so there are not that many Mitchells.
Let me know if any more clues turn up.
