Hi All,
I'm looking for my G.G.G Grandfather Caleb Hartland's death record. I can't find it at all in the indexes and I'm stuck with where to go from here. He was born in 1827 in Wolverhampton to Edward & Mary Hartland, he married Jane Haynes in 1847 and lived in Upper Penn in the 1851 census then in the Pountney Street area in West Wolverhampton (St.John's Ward) for what seems would be the rest of his life. He was a Coffee Mill Maker by trade. It clearly shows his wife Jane as a widow in the 1881 census and there's no sign of him on the census in its entirety.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Cheers,
Peter.

Hi Peter
Have you got him on the census in 1861/71? Trying to tie down the period when he died.
Regards, Bill

Hi Bill,
He's in the 1861 census at 83 Pountney Street with his family, and in 1871 census at 11 Barracks which is just off Pountney Street again with his family. My G.G Grandmother, his daughter Emma was married in St.Luke's Bilston later on that year and the certificate doesn't state him deceased.
Regards,
Peter.

Hello Peter
I've been through Ancestry from 71 to 81 and can find no trace of Caleb. Do you know when his wife died. If so, maybe they were buried in the same grave, so the burial record would help you - very helpful some burial records are. Also if you can work out the church they attended then you could go through the parish records from 1871 to 1881. Your local records office would help there. I can only suppose his name has been misread - that has happened to one or two of mine. Sorry I haven't been of more help.

Hi Linda,
Caleb's wife Jane died on the 10th May 1893 on Thomas Street which is again just round the corner from Pountney Street where the family have stayed based for most of their lives. I have on numerous occasions sent emails to the Wolverhampton Archives for advice regarding a possible burial place (not research) and they never reply (surely advice is free?). I live in West Yorkshire and find it difficult to get the time to go down to Staffordshire to look through the records myself. I would guess the burial records are all I can hope for now!
Thanks for looking!
Regards,
Peter.

Dear Peter
Try ringing the local archives - they well well though expect a fee for looking things up. Maps are useful - on the internet, or repro maps such as the Godfrey edition ones. If you go to your local library and look up the telephone directory you should be able to find the tel no of the main cemetery. However, if you can't go in person you may well have to find someone else to go for you or pay a researcher. Knowing Jane's date and place of death ought to make it reasonably easy to find where she's buried. Come to think of it have you tried the national burial index at your library for them?

Just a quick 6 year update, as you do...
I've still not had any luck whatsoever in finding out what happened to the aforesaid Caleb Hartland.
I found his wife Jane's burial at Merridale Municipal Cemetery, Wolverhampton, took note of the grave number and found she's buried with a woman of no apparent relation. It's probably a pauper grave.
I could do with new sets of eyes looking into this.. nudge nudge wink..
If anyone can help me i'll offer my help in return.
Cheers,
Pete.

Hi Peter,
Was Caleb his only forename? Just considering the possibility that if he had more than one, he may have been buried under the other. I can find a William Hartland, born about 1823, who died in the Jan quarter of 1881 in Wolverhampton. There's also a Benjamin, born abt 1826, but the death is recorded as 1870, so too early if he's shown on the 1871 census.
On FamilySearch there is a recorded burial in Brierley Hill ( about 8-10 miles from Wolverhampton) for a Hartland, no forename, male, on 16 Nov 1877.
On FreeBMD I did a nationwide search and the one death that came closest with regard to age was a Charles Hartland who died aged 42 at Pancras which borders London and Middlesex.
Those are the only ones I could find that come close to the dates you gave.
