I am trying to trace what happened to Robert Allan (brother of my great great grandmother Barbara Allan). Robert was born in Rayne, Aberdeen, to James Allan and Isobel Cruickshank (sometimes Isabella on censuses) on 3/9/11804. Other children were William (b. 1793); Elisabeth (b. 1796); Isobel (b. 1798); Jean (b. 1802). I have not been able to find Barbara's birth certificate but she was born c. 1811/1812 according to other documents.
I have Robert and his mother on the 1841 census, and the on the 1851 he is married to a Jean Allan (b. Cavish) and they have 4 children (Robert, George, Isabella, William). In the adjoining dwelling is his mother Isabella [sic] and also Barbara and her (illegitimate) son Robert Garden - my great grandfather (his father was a John Garden). Robert went to Orkney where he became a famous and wealthy trader and introduced floating ships. Barbara followed him there ... but I have not been able to trace her brother after 1851, or what happened to their parents Isabel and James. (Presume James must have died prior to 1841). Any pointers or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Mary Garden
