Title: looking for Ramsay family from Kilconquhar
Post by: hantsguy on Thursday 28 September 06 20:55 BST (UK)
HI, I am trying to trace my ancestors who were from Kilconquhar in Fife.
So far I have a William Ramsay born in Largo,  he married a Janet Wilson Wishart, in Kilconquhar, she was I believe a daughter of a David Wishart and Hana Mitchel.
A john Ramsay 1822 who married a Agnes Robertson in 1865
I have a John Robertson Ramsay, forester who married an Annabella Marysmith on the 2June 1899. at Kilconquhar.
A George ramsay who married a Margaret hunter in 1903 at kilconquhar.
any information regarding the above Ramsay family would be very welcome.

Hi, Norrie G,

Thank you for the information listed, I will have to do some searching to see if there is any connection to my Ramsay's.
I have been finding it fairly difficult searching for connections as Ramsay seems to be quite a common name.
Once again, thanks you very much

Hi Swingteacher,
Thank you for your offer regarding the Ramsay's who are from Kilconquhar.
Any information would be really helpful.
It would seem that my ancestors nearly all came from Kilconquhar, Largo and Ceres.
Unfortunately it is or seems to be a common name and is quite hard finding the family connections.
Once again, many thanks for your offer.

Hello hantsguy,

I see that your original post dates from some time ago.  So I wonder whether you have found further information in the interim (so we don't duplicate searches which have already been done)?

Also (so that we know what we are trying to find  :) ) whether you hope to take an ancestral line further back, or to find out more information about related people, or to find other descendants?

In your original post, is this a direct line?
Either or both of John Robertson RAMSAY (m 1899) and George RAMSAY (m 1903)
to
John RAMSAY who m Agnes ROBERTSON in 1865
to
William RAMSAY who m Janet Wilson WISHART in 1815

Incidentally, in the original post John RAMSAY's birthdate is given as 1822 - the IGI lists the birthdate of John RAMSAY, son of William RAMSAY & Janet WISHART as 1820.

Do you have proof (certificates, entries in the OPRs, censuses, etc) of the lineage?

If you are trying to trace William & Janet further back, did they live on into the time of censuses or (better still) statutory registration?

Janet Wilson WISHART
You say that you think Janet was a daughter of David WISHART & Hannah MITCHELL (however spelled).  As you will know from the IGI, this Janet was b 1792 in Largo.  The IGI also has a marriage record for David & Hannah, St Cuthberts, Edinburgh in 1787.

In the light of Scots naming patterns, it seems that these are the right parents - given that William & Janet named their first daughter Hanah and their second son David.

Unfortunately, nothing jumped out at me that would help trace David & Hannah further back ...

William RAMSAY
Naming patterns of the children suggest that William's parents might have been John & Mary.  I could see in the IGI only two Fife births which might fit.  If you are certain that he was born in Largo, then the following seems most likely - John, son of John RAMSAY & Mary WISHART, b 3 Sep, bap 4 Sep 1791, Largo Fife.

There's an LDS submission for the marriage of John RAMSAY & Mary WISHART - 24 Nov 1787 in Lower Largo.  A free search on ScotlandsPeople (I didn't download the result) indicates that there was indeed such a marriage in Largo on that date.

But you probably have all the above  :)

Good luck with your searches,

JAP
PS (added later): I see from a later post of yours that you've probably traced the RAMSAYs back a long way:
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,222404.msg1166901.html#msg1166901
And is this you  :)
http://genforum.genealogy.com/ramsay/messages/789.html
Norrie, it looks as though you've searched the Kilconquhar graveyard for RAMSAYs in the past on another list (for someone else):

Hi JAP,

Thanks for your message.

Some of the information on my original posting I had got slightly wrong as I was very new to family history. ::)
yes you are right i have managed to trace back to 1695 the paternal side, with images of births, marrages and some deaths all from scotlands people, but have hit a brick wall there.
Its the off shoots that I am struggling with, siblings and their families.
John Ramsay b 1723 at Ceres  wed Elispeth Smart in 1758 their son John b 1764 m Mary Wishart 1787 at Lower Largo.
child of above is
William Ramsay b 1791 wed Janet Wilson Wishart  at Kilconquhar 1815
Child of above is John Ramsay B 1820 who wed Margaret Henderson and then Agnes Robertson.
Child of above was George robertson Ramsay b 1868 in Kilconquhar.
He was my grandfather.
I live in the south of England so ALL my searching is done on line, I hope to be able to get up to Scotland one day to search the records. So any information I can get is so very welcome.
Once again thank you so very much

Hi Jap & huntsguy , now you brought it up I can remember doing
these lookup for Judy in the states

she was researching this family

Subject: RE: [FIF] Graveyards for Kilconquhar Residents

Hi Norrie:

Once again, thanks for your reply. I'll list my ancestors below and any
dates I have for them. I'm jumping into the 1700's with my research, and
the trail is getting sketchier. Any help you can give is appreciated. As
most people on this list have mentioned, your kindness is much appreciated.

William RAMSAY may have been born in Largo; Janet WISHART, unknown
birthplace; all their children were born in Kilconquhar. I assume they died
there as well.

GGG-Grandfather: Married Janet WISHART 1815 in Kilconquhar.
*William RAMSAY, born circa 1790-95, died ?, blacksmith
Janet WISHART, born circa 1790-95, died ?
Children of William & Janet:
Hanah RAMSAY, born 1816, died ?
Mary RAMSAY, born 1818, died ?
*John RAMSAY, born 1820, died 1883 in Kilconquhar, blacksmith, my
GG-grandfather
David RAMSAY, born 1822, died ?
Male Child RAMSAY, born 1823, died ?
William RAMSAY, born 1825, died ?
Thomas RAMSAY, born 1828, died ?
Henry RAMSAY, born 1831, died ?
Janet RAMSAY, born 1834, died ?
Agnes RAMSAY, born 1836. died ?
Margaret RAMSAY, born 1836, died ? (I think Agnes & Margaret were twins

GG-Grandfather: Married twice; I'm descended from wife #2:
*John RAMSAY, married wife #1 Margaret HENDERSON 1842.
Their children all born in Kilconquhar as far as I know:
John RAMSAY, born 1846, died ?, Blacksmith
William RAMSAY, born 1844, died ?
James RAMSAY, born 1857, died ?

*John RAMSAY, married wife #2 Agnes ROBERTSON in Colinsburgh in 1865.
Their children all born in Kilconquhar as far as I know:
Frederick Melville RAMSAY, born 1866, died ?
George RAMSAY, born 1868, died ?
*Alexander Murdoch RAMSAY, born 1871, died circa 1968 in Canada
Helen RAMSAY, born 1873, died ? in Canada

That's it for the Kilconquhar tribe. Very prolific, as you can see. I'm
hoping at least some of them are buried there with markers.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi again Huntsgay this is further information that I sent to Judy
( If you wish to contact Judy I can supply the Email she use at the time )

Charleton  South Lodge that the Ramsay family lived from
1851 to some time before 1891 when John had died and we find another
 Blacksmith living there. William Crichton

This site shows the present Golf Course but you can also bring up pictures
of the house. http://www.charleton.co.uk/

I decided to find this house “Charleton South Lodge.”
From old maps I could see that the Lodge house was on the main road from Upper Largo to Colinsburgh.
Turning up the Golf Course road I could see no Old Lodge house that would
fit the bill. Stopping a car to ask for directions I was amazed to find it was Baron Bondie the father of the present owner of Carleton House. He was very
interested in my research, was able to tell me where the cottage was located,
He never new it as South Lodge only as the Blacksmiths Cottage and smiddy.
He did not invite me in for tea, and due to changes in the entrance to the Golf
course the cottage was a further 200 yards back the road to Upper Largo.
As any researcher would do I knocked on the door and explained why I wished
to take pictures of the house. I was invited in and offered coffee, shown around the house and garden a saw how it had been extended and the roof raised to
accommodate upstair living in the 70s. The Baron had indicated that it had ceased being a Smiddy in the 70s when he had sold it.

I did take photos but at this point can't find them,

Hello again Norrie G and David R,

Stunning stuff, Norrie!!

Especially the information from certificates which confirms the hypotheses which had been drawn from Scots naming patterns etc e.g. the names of the parents of Janet (WISHART) RAMSAY.

Norrie, I've noticed the incredible help you give on the RootsWeb Fife list so it's absolutely great that you joined RootsChat this year - a big plus for us RootsChatters.  :)
You must be very well-organized (and have very robust computers, and/or excellent back-up systems) to have been able to find that past correspondence so quickly (I've lost so much email correspondence over the years  :'( ).

Incidentally David, I often look back at people's other posts because sometimes there are further clues in them - not to mention that your post which started this current thread had been resuscitated from your very early days on RC so it was almost certain that you would have found further info since then  :)

Also, I often check out Google - sometimes one finds real gems (as in this case).  I Googled for:
"william ramsay" + "janet wishart"
and thus found Norrie's Rootsweb post  :D
There are other hits.

The very kind current offer by swingteacher in response to a post from the past has developed in a way that probably could not have been expected - congratulations swingteacher  ;)
It made me think of the song "From small things, big things grow" by Australian indigenous artist, Jimmy Little!

This is a really interesting thread and let's hope that there's more to be found  ;D  I'll keep watching the thread though I fear I won't able to add anything   :(

Best regards,

JAP

Hi,  Norrie G and JAP, thanks for the help you have given me.
I am looking forward to anything that swingteacher may find about any Ramsay's from that area.
I appreciate any advice that you guys may have in enabling me to not only go further back, but to perhaps even find living rellies.
Once again, thanks.

Hi all

I've got more recent Ramsays in my tree related to my brother's ex-Mother-in-Law. They start with:
ALEXANDER DEWAR RAMSAY born Abt. 1891 in St Andrews & St Leonards, Fife. He married ELIZABETH KIDD ARCHER who was born Abt. 1893 in St Andrews & St Leonards, Fife and died Abt. 1963 in Memorial Cottage Hospital, St Andrews, Fife.

Their daughter:
ANNIE DEWAR RAMSAY was born 07 Jul 1918 in 98 North Street, St Andrews, Fife, and died 13 Aug 2004 in Memorial Hospital, St Andrews, Fife.  She married THOMAS MARSHALL, son of GEORGE MARSHALL and EFFIE REEKIE.  He was born 09 Apr 1916 in 4 Barncraig Street, Denbeath, Wemyss, Fife, and died 28 Feb 1993 in Memorial Hospital, St Andrews, Fife.

In a circuitous way Effie Reekie was a 1st cousin once removed of our father!

Does any of this fit with the Kilconquhar Ramsays?

Regards

Chiad Fhear

Can I jump into this Ramsay pond and ask if anyone can make a connection between the Kilconquhar Ramsays and those from Kirkcaldy?

Peter R. (1790 - 1840) is my 2g-grandfather, and married Ann Cumming(s) (c. 1798 - 1866) in Kirkcaldy on Feb. 07, 1820.  They had a family of 7 of whom I am aware, 2 of whom (at least) died young.  The children of whom I am aware are:

George - Feb. 12, 1827, Abbotshall
Ann - June 1828, Abbotshall - Feb. 10, 1830, Kirkcaldy
Janet - Apr. 22, 1929, Abbotshall
Peter - May 14, 1831, Abbotshall
Ann - 1832, Kirkcaldy - June 08, 1913, Coaltown of Balgonie
Esiball - Oct. 1833, Kirkcaldy - Nov. 05, 1833, Kirkcaldy
Magdalen - c. 1837

I believe that Peter (father) was the s/o David R. (c. 1761) and Janet Hart (c. 1764) of Kirkcaldy, and that Ann Cumming was the d/o George C. (c. 1757, Kinghorn? - 1835, Kirkcaldy) and Grizzel Bennet (c. 1766, Kirkcaldy?).

If anyone can fit this family into the greater Ramsay family of Fife, I'd be most appreciative.

Thanks for the data, Norrie.  I don't know if any of them fit with my rellies data or not, as Ann(2) is the only one on whom I have much information.

I also see that I had too many fingers on the keyboard when typing my previous posting!  Janet should be Apr. 22 1829, NOT 1929!  :-[

Your good work with the Fife MIs is much appreciated!

Hello.  I'm new to this site and am also researching Ramsay.  I have an Agnes Ramsay (daughter of William and Agnes Miller), born 1735 and married George Barclay.  They had a son, George Barclay, born 1755 in Kilconquhar, Fife, Scotland.

Any information on Agnes, her parents and/or her husband and children is greatly appreciated!

Sincerely,
