I am mapping out a Barr family orginally from the Aldergrove Lough Neagh area of Antrim.
Top of the tree is a John Barr and Anne Reid [?] buried in St James Aldergrove Ballyginniff. They may have moved around according to a pension claim of one of their children between Glendarragh Crumlin Crosshill Oldstone and Muckamore. Their children [born between 1832 and 1852] MAY have been:
Bernard - Baptised in Glenavy Rc - in Oldstone later
Mary who married Henry McGarry - children in Oldstone
Robert - applied for pension - probably Robert Barr Oldstone who married Bridget McLa[e]rnon 1860 Randalstown and probably Robert Barr witness with Sarah McLarnon on wedding Hugh Christy and Mary McLarnon 1856 Randalstown. Robert had several children including Catherine Sarah and Jane - in High Street Antrim.
Patrick - from Oldstone married Catherine McCauley 1879 - house in Islandbawn Muckamore 1901 Census: Catherine is widowed with children John and Annie
John Reid - married Mary McKenna - buried Randalstown RC - children in Boghead Muckamore. Link to Barrs who owned confectionary and bicycle shop in Antrim.
Daniel from Trigracey - married Margaret Palmer - both died of TB - some children
Henry - married Mary McGeown - chidren in Dunadry and Ligoniel
Also around is a Charles Barr who married a Martha McAteer - link to Dobbins living in Masserene in 1901 Census and McKernans possibly Cooleys.
And a John Barr who married a Helena Lennon/Lernon. They have a Jane, Henry, [married Reilly], Margaret and John Francis baptised in Glenavy RC between 1866 [?] and 1892
Interested also in Barrs connected to Madden McAteer McGarry McQuillan and Darragh families and these families - Some in BELFAST [Cavour Street Verner street for example]
Samuel Barr and Mary McErlain
Daniel McGarry and Mary Barr
Daniel Barr and Mary/Maria Weir
John Barr and Ann McAuley - have a Robert in Market Street Belfast 1887
There is a link via these families to Bob Barr manager of Celtic football club. He is at the Crumlin Bazaar.
I am willing to share records with anyone researching Barrs in Belfast or Antrim. I would LOVE to have any small snippet of information about Barrs in this region! Anything would help.

Hello FionaLorraine,
I've just posted a thread about Barrs from Co. Antrim. www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,314803.0.html If you post a letter to the minister of Connor Presbyterian Church he may be able to send you the address of
Fred Wylie who organised a Barr Family Reunion in the Church Hall earlier this year.

I don't know if I have the proper source information. My g grandfather was Daniel Barr and he lived at 48, Verner St., Belfast. His father was also Daniel and he died at 48, Verner St. I don't know where my g g grandfather was born or if his wife was Maria Weir but I strongly suspect she was. I have traced 6 of their children but not my great grandfather but the evidence based on your thread is quite strong. When their daughter Elizabeth Jane was born on 23rd Feb 1865 the witnesses at her baptism were Daniel and Mary Mc Garry. When their daughter Ellen was baptised the witnesses were James Barr and Mary McGarry. These are all names you mentioned.Do you think with your obvious wide research that there could be a definite connection

Hello, I too am researching. I descend from Daniel Barr b. 1827 and wife Maria Weir through their son John Barr (b. 1857). No. 48 Verner Street Belfast seems to have featured across the generations , with Daniel Barr (above) and his sons Daniel (b. 1860) who was a barber and John (above) having lived there. Others born to Daniel and Maria were Alexander, James, Elizabeth Jane, Ellen and Mary. Elizabeth Jane and Ellen died very young.
Interestingly there is an Alexander Barr born about 1790 who died in Verner Street in January 1857. Possibly an unrelated "Barr" but am wondering if Alexander was parent to Daniel Barr (1827). Alexander Barr had a draper's shop on the High Street and sold various soft furnishings and other items, particularly woollens. I have found myriad old advertisements placed by Alexander from the Belfast Commerical Chronicle.

Do you have any information on barrs that came over to Saltcoats Ayrshire from ulster. My earliest Barr relative in Saltcoats came over from Ireland in around 1830 and I know that people moved freely between the 2 countries
-
Sorry, so far no information about Barr members moving to Ayrshire..but will post again if I find anything on this.
