Title: Roma people in Nottinghamshire/Leicestershire?
Post by: Burto on Wednesday 27 September 06 18:11 BST (UK)
Hi,
Just wondering if there were any Roma in Nottinghamshire/Leicestershire and around what time?
Also are there any common surnames?
There is a chance that one of my ancestors was Roma. Are there any specific occupations? My possible ancestor was illegitimate, I can't find anything on his mother and his occupation was "professor of the violin" he settled down and had a family in Nottingham but was born in Shepshed Leicestershire.

I have a Romany gypsy family NOT from Notts or Leics but there were definately Notts/Leics gypsies around the area, some just passed through, like showmen etc. Newark has been known for gypsies, for many years and I know some families did the Notts/Leics/Derbyshire circuit.

I know that one of the big Gypsy families in Notts was the Boswells.
