My grandfather enlisted into the 80th Company, 21st (Sharpshooters) Battalion the Imperial Yeomanry and was deployed to South Africa arriving there on 14 Mar 1901 and returned home on 10 May 1902. Whilst I know a little bit about the Imperial Yeomanry I have not found anything significant about the 21st Battalion in general and the 80th Company in particular. If anyone can recommend sources of information or indeed has and information on their deployment during the Boer War I would be most grateful.

What's your grandfather's name?
There are people on this board who have the medal rolls for the Imperial Yeomanry, and should be able to tell you something about the 21st Battalion as well.
Neil

Dear Neil,
My grandfather was called James Browm.

Sirus,
He's listed in the section on the Imperial Yeomanry on Kevin Asplin's site:
Brown, James 22190, Trooper 80th Coy., 21st Bn. I.Y.
Although the full medal roll would tell you a bit more.

Neil,
Thanks, any idea how to see the full medal roll or is that a TNA trip?

Sorry to jump in on this thread, but have just found out that one of my rellie's a Sidney Grimshaw, was also an Imperial Yeoman (from his first world war attestation papers). How do I find out which betallion or unit he was with? He was from London if that helps???
-
Hi Sirus
I have a copy of Kevin's book which details his transcript of the IY Medal Rolls. I'm in the USA until Sunday, but will check which medals your relative was entitled to on my return.

Paul

JK,
The National Archives will have his service record.

Paul,
Very thanks for the medal information as it gives a picture of his war and where he was in South Africa. I just need to find a little more about the actual history of the 80th Company now.

Thanks for the link Paul, there some excellent photos of the 21st Battalion on active service. A visit to the Regimental Archives in Croydon will answer all my questions.

My grandfather was in the 21st Battallion Imperial Yeomanry during the Boer War. I have been transcribing the diary of the commanding officer Colonel Jarvis and this details the deployment of the four companies (mainly around Standerton and sometimes part of mobile columns across the Transvaal.
I'd be happy to share information with you,
Keith

JK - There are 5 Grimshaws on the IY QSA Medal roll but no Sidney. This suggests that either he didn't serve in South Africa or he used an alternative first name when enlisting. Was he perhaps known as Sidney (maybe that was his middle name) but his true first name was something else?
Incidentally, the roll also lists men who arrived in South Africa after the end of the war and therefore didn't receive a medal even though they served there for a time.

Keith,
I would be interested to know more about the 80th Company.

Hi Folks,
I also have a Gt Uncle who served in the Boer War 1901 -1902 but I have no idea or info at all about his time in South Africa.
He joined the Imperial Yeomanry (Shropshire) in January 1901, and went out to South Africa on 2 March 1901 with 13th Coy,5 Bn, 2nd Contingent Imperial Yeomanry.
His details were : 21596 Pte CH Howell.
If anyone has any information about 13th Coy, 5 Bn during their time in South Africa, I would be grateful, I would like to know more about my Gt Uncle's life during the Boer War.
Also, if anyone has access to the Medals Roll, could they look him up for me please?
Thanks
Barbara.

Hi Barbara - The IY QSA medal roll shows:
21596 Pte. Charles Henry Howell 13th (Shropshire) Co. Imperial Yeomanry entitled to QSA with clasps Cape Colony, Orange Free State, Transvaal, South Africa 1901 & South Africa 1902.
His attestation and service papers survive in series WO128 at the National Archives. These aren't available online.
Like most of the IY, his clasps indicate general service during the guerilla phase of the war after the great set piece battles had finished. This would have involved a lot of hard riding, patrolling, convoy escort duties and local skirmishes, many of which were quite sharp actions.

David

Ken
The IY QSA roll shows 24910 Pte. D.J. Waters, 39th (Berkshire) Co. Imperial Yeomanry, entitled to a QSA with clasps Cape Colony, Orange Free State, Transvaal, South Africa 1901 & South Africa 1902. He was discharged medically unfit 14/8/1902.
Unusually for the IY his service papers are not in series WO 128 at the NA. This is probably because he was invalided and they have been filed elsewhere although they're not in the PIN 71 series (men invalided to pension) either.

David

Hi Ladysmith,
Thanks very much for the information on my Gt Uncle Charlie.
Because I am unable to visit The National Archives myself I did employ the services of a researcher a couple of years ago and was able to get copies of my Uncle's Attestation & Service Papers.
At least that gave me dates & a personal description of him but not too much otherwise.
I wish it were possible to read more about his particular Unit during the Boer War.
Were any War Diaries kept at that time? I don't know too much about it really.
I appreciate your help.
Barbara.

Hi Barbara,
The IY companies were fairly small although there were published and unpublished accounts of some of them in the Boer War. Your best best for the Shropshire IY would be to check with the main library in Shrewsbury to see if they have anything.
David
-
Cheers David, I'll try that one.
Barbara.

It is also worth checking WO97 for IY papers. These are being put online by Findmypast if you cannot get to Kew.
Ken

Many thanks, Ken & David, the information has been most helpful.

Hi All,
My Great Grandfather and Great Uncle headed off to SA together. They were Horace and Noel Gresley of the 8th (Derbyshire) Coy, 4th Batt. IY.
Some of the earlier links noted nolonger work, sadly, so is there anyone who could advise me where they may have served in SA and for how long?
Thanks in advance for any help which may be offered.
Regards,
Guy

Hello
On my Grandfathers attestation papers for the Canadian Engineers in 1918 he states he had served in the Hartford Imperial Yeomanry 1908 - 1911. Is anyone able to tell me anything about them. Is it possible they could be in the US?
Thank you in advance
Nelly

Hi Nelly
Welcome to Rootschat :)
I suspect it is Hertfordshire Imperial Yeomanry....They were a British Military unit of Volunteers.
Ady
-
The British Imperial Yeomanry was disbanded in 1908.
Ken
-
As Ken says disbanded 1908 and became Hertfordshire Yeomanry (Territorial Force)
Ady
-
Thank you Ken and Ady. He may have joined it before it was disbanded. Would you know where I could find the records, if any please? :)

You could try on the links of the above link.

Hi Nelly
Only the records of Volunteers, Yeomanry and Territorials who were embodied for full time service - ie in the Boer War or WW1 have been kept. All records are online except for the IY during the Boer War which are in Kew. But there is an index here - http://www.britishmedals.us/kevin/impyeomanryl.html
If he served during war-time details of his medals will be on Ancestry. If he did not serve full-time he only attended one night a week, plus a two week annual camp. So he would not have done anything worth recording.
It is always worth contacting his local record office, as they may have some background records or photographs.
Ken

Hi Ken, that would make sense of why I can't find any records. I will certainly follow up on your suggestions. Thank you.
Thank you too Ady.
