Title: Please Help! To all who have knowledge of US Records.
Post by: YvonneR on Sunday 24 September 06 11:10 BST (UK)
A call to all of you with a knowledge of American Records

I have answered a query and have got completely hooked on this one. There appears to be so many clues but I am struggling with it because  although I have done a great deal of research into US records (my Dad was born in New york in 1915 but I live in the UK) but this is actually showing up my  lack of knowledge.

Vernon Uttley born 1899 in Yorkshire, arrived in the US in 1915 (going to his Uncle , Thomas Burns in Massachusetts)

He lived in the US for 2 years and later returned in 1921 (ship passenger manifest from his next arrival in 1921 on Ellis Island shows that he was in the US before from 1915 to 1917)

There isn't a WWI draft index card available (at least not that I have found up to now!) but thinking about it, it would appear that he was no longer in the US in 1918 when he would have been required to register for the draft....yet! on the 1930 census where it asks if "veteran of US military or Naval forces" it shows that someone answered yes to this question and WW (which I have always presumed is World War)

Would you  take from this information that he actually served in WWI in England and when the question was asked it was misunderstood that it referred to the US military services?

Also on the 1921 manifest, it shows that his passage was paid by the British Government. Has anyone ever come across this before?

Here is the thread:

Your help is appreciated in this

Cheers!

Agnes- found following info. on medal card (National Archives) -
Vernon Uttley #35086 Private Machine Gun Corps.

Sounds as though he might have served in WWI but not in US forces.

Agnes,

I had an uncle who enlisted in the US Army during WW1, so there is no draft registration record. That might be the case with Vernon, and why the answer was "yes" on the 1930 census.
