Hi everyone :)
I was wondering if anyone might be able to help me out here please.
I have a family - John FRADLEY b.~1835 in Stone, Staffs and Elizabeth FRADLEY (nee HALL) b.~1836, also in Stone. They married in 1855 at St. Mark's, Shelton, Staffs and on the 1861 census they had a 3 year old son, also called John.
Now what is puzzling me somewhat is the "address" that is listed for them on the 1861 census. They are amongst a long list of people covering 2-3 pages that appear to have been added on to the end of the census, entitled Form A -

There is no address as such, just the word "vessel" and the headers are written for the parish/town of Burslem, Stoke upon Trent. A few of the men have "Master" written as their occupation, including John, but I've never come across an entry like this and as far as I'm aware Burslem is an inland town so I don't think, although I could very well be wrong, that it is referring to a ship of any kind.
Any ideas?

It's a group of vessels on the canals.

Oh I see, that makes sense now, thanks very much! ;D
I don't know the area at all so hadn't realised there was a canal. I don't suppose you have any idea why they might be living on the canal?

It was a common thing for families to live on the (narrow)boats.

Ok, thanks very much for your help :)

John Fradley seems to have travelled the Trent and Mersey Canal and was moored by Barnton Tunnel mouth near to the Salt Works in 1871.He was in Middlewich in 81 and 91 where he semms to have settled. The boatmans family would travel along with the cargo with only a tiny back cabin for living cooking and sleeping.

Stone is about 8 miles south of Stoke-on-Trent which itself now consists of six towns five as Arnold Bennet stated in Anna of the five Towlns) Tunstall, Burslem, Hanley, Stoke, Fenton and Longton. Stoke-on-Trent has now expanded in all directions prticularly to the south and now includes places that were formerly part of Stone "Parish"
In the Census records one needs to infer "in the parish of stone" as opposed to Stone town itself. Normacot and Lightwood are only yards from Longton whereas Stone town is several miiles away.

Hi
I'm afraid that you've been unlucky - the enumerator was supposed to use a specific form for vessels which gave the name and port of origin of each vessel as well.
