Title: Elsie Pirrie/Perrie/Pirie 1852
Post by: shearg on Thursday 21 September 06 19:14 BST (UK)
I was hoping someone could help find the parents of the above person or any other info would be very helpful and greatly appreciated.

We have from census returns in Canada that she was born in Oct. 1852 in Scotland and through family lore we think it was in the Aberdeen area.

We don't know when she came to Canada but she married Obadiah Stafford in 1883 in Manitoba.

Thanks for any help,
shearg

Hi Shearg

I have checked various sources and the nearest that I can find for you are the following two baptisms. I am assuming that Elsie was a diminutive.

12 July 1851       Elspet Pirie, Parents - John Pirie and Sarah Forbes in Longside
25th May 1852  Elspit Pirie, Parents - Robert pirie and Margaret Fyfe in Newhills

Both Longside and Newhills are parishes in Aberdeenshire

Do you have any idea when she went to Canada? This might help trace her on censuses.

Regards

I know ancestral files aren't too reliable, but there is an entry on the LDS site that says the couple Robert Pirie ( 1812-1876) & Margaret (Fife) ( 1825 -1860 )died in Northumberland, Ontario.

There are also IGI extracted files for more children of Robert Pirie and Margaret Fyfe
ELSPIT PIRIE birth 22 MAR 1852
JANE FYFE PIRIE - 1846
ALEXANDER FYFE PIRIE - 1848
ROBERT PIRIE - 1854
JEAN PIRIE - 1856
There are also many others listed under  Ancestral &  Pedigree Resource Files

Looking at the 1871 census for Ontario, they have Robert listed as a lot older..( age 69) This lists heads of households only, but someone may be able to do a lookup for you on the Canada board...There is a Jane working in another household Seymour Northumberland district that matches the birth age above, also...

There is also a submitted entry for Robert's death of 1876, no location given.

PS: Can't easily see the family in the 1861 Census - maybe they left between 1856-61 for Canada?

Possible 1841 Census entry for Robert. Not with family so hard to connect to Old Deer birth place at present. He looks to have already been in the parish of Skene before his marriage to Margaret in 1845:

Robert Pirie    27, blacksmith
Peter Laing    20, blacksmith
Agnes Sivewright 10, female servant
Isobel Wilson    55, female servant

Address:  Bridgend Of Concraig, Skene

Oops, just found this to throw a wrench into my own works...
http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~maryc/ndur76p2.htm...
A marriage for Elspet in 1876...although a little research may still find more
than one marriage...but then she'd have changed her name...
Guess a marriage cert will need to be sent for to settle the matter...

( I think it's only around $7.00 Canadian) but never any guarantees that parents are listed...

Looking back into the 1871 for the Seymour district that Robert Pirie
was listed as FARMER & BLACKSMITH so it still is looking pretty good all around were it not for above wrench... :D haha... J.J.

I have Elsie Perrie's marriage certificate before me.  She married Obediah Stafford on July 18, 1883.  The location is a farm in North Norfolk, Manitoba: Section 1, township 8, Range 10 but the meridian is not specified.  It may be meridian 1.  This is also her place of residence although the name Wakefield is included.  This may be the name of the farm owner or that of a nearby post office.
She was born in Aberdeen, Scotland.  The names of her parents are John Perrie and Margaret Anderson.  She is Presbyterian.  The groom is Episcopalian and the minister is Methodist.  The witnesses are John Walker of Gladstone and Eliza Towns of Treherne.
The groom is 41 years of age, living in Gladstone.  His occupation is farmer.  His parents are James Stafford and Susan Morgan.  He is listed as a bachelor, not a widower.  I have done some research on this line and I know that he married Elizabeth Booth in 1862 so he is either married or a widower.

I see the extracted IGI entry for brother Peter b. March 11 1857 Enzie, Banff, Scot
and submission for a Margaret Pirie b. 1845 Enzie
So James is probably a brother?
so here is James ( born June 9, about 1849 / imm.c.1880 Scotland)  with his family in 1901:
