Hello my Dad was adopted and I recently aquired a copy of his original birth certificate, which gives the name of his mother but the fathers name is blank. I am told his mother was living with a man when he was born, however they were not married until a year later.
What does this mean? Is it that the father was simply not known or was it common at this time (50's) for the father not to be put on the marriage certificate if the child was born out of wedlock? ???
Thanks, Toby.

Hi Toby
It wasn't the norm to include the father's name on the birth certificate of an illegitimate child so it doesn't really confirm anything either way I'm afraid :-\
His adoption papers may show more if that was a route you wanted to follow.

This was a very good link when I asked the same sort of question a few days ago, courtesy of Arranroots.
